Genene Jones, the former pediatric nurse convicted in 1984 for killing a Kerrville toddler with an overdose of muscle relaxers, has been declared competent to stand trial on new charges involving the deaths of five San Antonio children in the 1980s.

In the new indictments, Jones is accused of murder in the deaths of Joshua Sawyer on Dec. 12, 1981; Richard “Ricky” Nelson, 8 months, who died July 3, 1981; Patrick Zavala, 4 months, who died Jan. 17, 1982; Rosemary Vega, 2 years old, who died Sept. 16, 1981; and Paul Villarreal, who was 3 months old when he died Sept. 24, 1981.

Jones - From 2015: convicted in 1985 of murder of Chelsea McClellan (15 mos old) & the attempted murder of another infant. Sentenced to 99 years in prison (plus 60 years for attempted murder). In 2013, CNN described the reason for Jones’ impending release as “an old Texas law designed to prevent prison overcrowding. The Mandatory Release law allows inmates convicted of violent crimes between 1977 and 1987 to be automatically released if their “good behavior” credit plus their time served equals their sentence. The law was changed in 1987 to exclude violent criminals, but it isn’t retroactive. 2018: after giving defense a deadline for a plea deal that would impose a sentence delaying her mandatory release until after her one-hundredth birthday. The Jan. 31 deadline passed without a response. Cox said consideration of any plea agreement was “just a little bit premature at this point.”
3/1/18 was extradited from Gatesville to Bexar County jail. 5/30/18: Under went Psych evaluation. 6/20/18: Awaiting Psych report. 7/19/18 Trial Update: Trial delayed, waiting for psych report.
2/14/19 Update: Hearing held - Magistrate Judge Andrew Carruthers announced Thursday (2/14/19) the finding of the mental evaluation of the 68-year-old inmate, who has been in prison since 1984. But Jones’ attorney, Cornelius Cox, challenged the competency finding & requested another evaluation, which Carruthers granted. Through Cox, Jones pleaded not guilty to each of the charges.

Considering this is in Texas I’m shocked this woman wasn’t given the death penalty.

Genene Jones: The Nurse With A Savior Complex Who May Have Killed Up To 60 Infants
In the four years she worked at Bexar County Medi9cal Center Hospital in San Antonio, 47 infants died under suspicious circumstances. Jones quickly developed a reputation for extremely suspicious behavior, including:

  • Grabbing a syringe and squirting herself and a recently diseased infant with the sign of the cross—in front of several onlookers.
  • The fact that infants in her care seemed to constantly require her resuscitation.
  • She was often observed singing to an infant’s corpse as she prepared it for delivery to the morgue.
  • One infant had seizures three days in a row—but only under her care.
  • Seven suspicious infant deaths occurring under her watch in the course of two weeks.
  • Once joking, “They’re going to think I’m the Death Nurse.”
  • Insisting on carrying dead babies to the hospital morgue herself. In one case, she actually ripped the baby out of a grieving relative’s arms and ran down the corridor with it.

Genene Jones: A Psychological Profile
  • From an examination of Jones’s behavior, analysts have concluded she likely suffered from Histrionic Personality Disorder:
  • She became uneasy if she wasn’t the center of attention.
  • Despite widely being deemed unattractive, Jones had a tendency to wear inappropriately seductive clothing and to brag to everyone in earshot—whether or not they asked or wanted to listen—about her alleged sexual conquests.
  • She tended to make dramatic public displays of grief and crying over the infants it turns out she had murdered.
It is also reasonable to suspect that the disorder that compelled her murderous behavior was Munchausen’s Syndrome by Proxy, which involves fabricating symptoms of physical illness in order to obtain attention and sympathy from others.

This long article was written at the time, and has really detailed info on kids from the hospital and from the pediatrics clinic she worked at. Was really good context to read as I didn't know anything about the case until I saw this thread pop up.

She really seemed to get off on medical emergencies and being the hero - if those emergencies weren't happening naturally, then she was determined to cause them.

"Convicted killer Genene Jones, the pediatric nurse known as the “Angel of Death” for fatally injecting a Kerrville child with an overdose of a powerful drug in the 1980s, will be tried on murder charges early next year, a judge decided Monday, after her attorney abruptly withdrew his motion for a competency trial.

Jones, dressed in a blue Bexar County jail jumpsuit, entered the courtroom using a walker. She sat in the jury box and appeared alert as she conferred with her attorneys, Cornelius Cox and Brigitte Garza, before the competency trial was to begin.

When Judge Frank Castro called her case, Jones stood with Cox and Garza at the bench, along with prosecutors Catherine Babbitt, Samantha DiMaio and Gretchen Flader. Cox told Castro that through research and observation, he no longer had any concerns that Jones could not help in her own defense.

“My client is now competent to stand trial,” he told Castro before withdrawing his motion for a jury trial on competency....

Castro set a deadline of Nov. 1 for pretrial motions in the upcoming cases and told the state and defense to be ready to go to trial in January...."

"SAN ANTONIO - When nurse Genene Jones was in prison serving a life sentence for killing a Kerrville child in 1982, her Bible was seized during a sweep of her cell.

Jones — who now is in the Bexar County Jail awaiting trial in the deaths of five children who died under mysterious circumstances at area hospitals where she worked as a nurse in the 1980s — wants the Bible returned.

“Her Bible gives her some comfort, and we feel that the Bible should be returned,” said Cornelius Cox, Jones' lawyer, following a hearing earlier this week.

During the hearing, Cox withdrew his request for a competency trial and Jones’ murder trial was set for early January.
Catherine Babbitt, major crimes chief of the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office, said for now, the Bible will only be returned on court orders...."

Well - just give her another bible.... :rolleyes: I'm sure there are the same words in them!

Like the judge said - waited 30 years to charge her - let's get on with it!
 
This is very interesting. I'm sure it's come up before, but does anyone recall a similar situation where the defendant made notes in her Bible and it was used against her?

9/9/19: Defense withdraws motion for competency hearing. Judge Castro set a deadline of Nov. 1 for pretrial motions in the upcoming cases and told the state and defense to be ready to go to trial in February. Next hearing to set trial date on 2/10/20.

Genene Jones, the nurse suspected in the deaths of a string of children under her care in the '70s and '80s, has pleaded guilty to the 1981 death of one infant in exchange for a single life sentence, MySanAntonio.com reports.
Child Killer Genene Jones Accepts Plea Deal for Life Sentence

The plea deal requires that Jones serve at least 20 years of her life sentence before becoming eligible for parole, though she was granted credit for two years served while awaiting trial. She will be 87 years old before she again has a chance to be free.

“With this plea, the odds are she will take her last breath in prison,” Bexar County prosecutor Catherine Babbitt said, according to The Associated Press.

Thank you MsMarple! I see on there 1/16/20 Trial Held - ?? - and this hearing 2/10/20 was then her sentencing date.
 
Why does it say she was released from jail on the 30th? I'm hoping that means she was just transferred back to a prison?
