(1/29/04 - WACO, TX) — An elderly woman who was serving a life prison sentence for fatally poisoning her boyfriend choked to death when she vomited after eating a meal, according to a preliminary autopsy report.
Rowena Ledbetter, 71, had been in prison nine months when she died Jan. 18. Ledbetter had a history of collapsing after eating and had previously suffered from a heart murmur, according to the report released Wednesday.
Coryell County Justice of the Peace Jimmy Wood said the final autopsy report could take several weeks.
Ledbetter was convicted last year of killing retired Waco police Lt. Herman "Mutt" Wilson, 85, by lacing his breakfast with fire ant poison. Wilson, who died in 2002 after suffering for nine hours, told authorities Ledbetter had poisoned him, according to court testimony.
