Wednesday, May 24th:
*Arraignment Hearing (@ 9:30am CT) - TX - Zevaya Flanagan (2) killed by father on facetime, Mar. 20, 2023, Houston - *Deontray Flanagan (35) arrested (3/20/23) & charged (3/22/23) with felony murder. $2M bond.
On Monday, 3/20/23 Flanagan allegedly picked up his daughter from day care before showing up at a nearby Walmart to confront Watson (mother of Zevaya) while she was at work. Flanagan hit the mother multiple times in the face & left with her phone, driving off & leading police on a chase, which turned into a standoff in northwest Harris County, deputies said. Prosecutors said Watson's mother, the child's grandmother, also worked at Walmart & her cellphone was used to FaceTime the suspect during the chase. The chase ended after he reportedly crashed into other cars & stopped in a field at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, sparking a standoff. SWAT officers surrounded the vehicle & after about 20 minutes, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said they moved in. The toddler was rushed from the car by authorities & taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. According to charging documents, Flanagan hit his daughter with & against a blunt object & also choked her to death. When asked why the father was charged with murder, Sawtelle said it could be upgraded to capital murder, pending the outcome of the autopsy. If Flanagan is charged with capital murder, the state could seek the death penalty.

However, the judge increased the suspect's bond to $2 million during Wednesday's hearing. Prosecutors with the Harris County District Attorney's Office said it's possible his charges could be upgraded, as well. Watson says in the week leading up to this incident she contacted the police on three different occasions about Flanagan, but she was told there was nothing they could do.

"The first day I called, he took my child. I was giving her a bath, and he took her out of the tub, she wasn't dressed, and he just took her out the house and drove away in a car, and didn't bring her back until 11 a.m. the next day," Watson explained.

This family says they hope that more will be done in the future to protect other children and women in situations like this.

"I wonder how many other Zevayas are around the world right now that are having the same problem in this city, in this state, we have to help one another," said Zevaya's grandfather, Curtis Watson.
