A 23-year-old man stabbed to death on the dance floor of a Birmingham nightclub has been described as a "best friend" by his family.
Cody Fisher, a non-league footballer, was fatally injured at The Crane nightclub, just before 23:45 GMT on 26 December.
Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later, West Midlands Police said.
His family said: "They have broken our hearts; I have lost my best friend."
Police are appealing for witnesses.
The incident happened during a Boxing Day event at the club, on Adderley Street, Digbeth and featured well-known techno DJ Marco Carola.
Mr Fisher played left back in local non-league football around Birmingham.
His picture, released by West Midlands police, shows him in the colours of a Bromsgrove side, and he also played for Stratford Town and Stourbridge.
He had been in the Birmingham City FC Academy, and was also a trainee with Walsall, according to social media and local media posts.

Has anything been said about what led up to this murder or suggestions as to motive? I've been following the MSM but may have missed some detail.

Is it considered random and unprovoked, or is it that the background isn't being discussed for operational reasons, does anyone know?

Does seem rather odd - has to be more to it.

Kami Carpenter, aged 21, and Remy Gordon, aged 22, have this evening been charged with murder and affray.

Four other people arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have been released on bail as our investigation continues.

The two defendants spoke only to confirm their names and a plea while a trial preparation hearing was fixed for 17 March, before the pair were remanded in custody. Carpenter, of no fixed address, and Gordon, of Cofton Park Drive, Birmingham, were not asked to enter any plea to the murder charge.

They both pleaded not guilty to affray during a previous magistrates court hearing.

A footballer was killed in a nightclub as a "planned act of retribution" after a minor altercation in a late night bar on Christmas Eve, a court heard.
Ex-Stratford Town player Cody Fisher, 23, was fatally stabbed at the Crane club in Birmingham on Boxing Day 2022.
Two days earlier, a "coming together" of Mr Fisher and defendant Remy Gordon in a busy bar was the catalyst for the attack, jurors heard.
Mr Gordon and two other men all deny murder at Birmingham Crown Court.
The 22-year-old of Cofton Park Drive, Birmingham, and Kami Carpenter, 21, and 18-year-old Reegan Anderson, both of no fixed address also all deny affray.

Carpenter buys himself a pizza an hour after knife 'plunged into the chest of Cody Fisher', the prosecution says

The trial resumes following a short break. Mr Duck says Carpenter also went to American Slice, having changed his clothes, where he had a brief interaction with Gordon and the man he was with.

He says: "It is some measure of the group's indifference to the violence. Mr Carpenter, almost to the hour of plunging a knife into the chest of Cody Fisher, buys himself a pizza and is making his way to his car to eat it elsewhere."

Catch up with the key points of today's hearing so far in our summary below:

- Kami Carpenter allegedly 'admitted' stabbing Cody Fisher in journey away from Crane
- He showed 'indifference' to the killing by buying pizza around an hour later, the prosecution said
- Carpenter also purchased a £900 flight to Jamaica due to fly from London on December 28, 2022
- Remy Gordon demonstrated his 'disingenuous nature' by trying to shift blame on to Carpenter, it was alleged
- CCTV captured Gordon 'mocking and repeating' the stabbing, the jury was told

In the queue to enter Solihull bar Popworld on Christmas Eve 2022, Mr Gordon posted in a group Snapchat that he was waiting to get in "then ruining someone's Christmas", jurors heard.

Group messages on Boxing Day and direct messages between Mr Gordon and others saw them discuss going to Crane, with Mr Gordon saying he was "looking to snuff someone".

A murder trial has been halted after a juror tested positive for Covid-19. The trial over the death of Stratford footballer Cody Fisher has been taking place at Birmingham Crown Court this week.
