Salford murder inquiry after human torso found in woodland

Police believe the remains wrapped in plastic may have been there for "a matter of days".

The discovery of a human torso in a secluded woodland has sparked a murder investigation.
Police said the alarm was raised when a passer-by spotted the "unknown item" in Kersal Wetlands, Salford, on Thursday.
Detectives and a pathologist confirmed human remains were found wrapped in plastic.

A post-mortem examination is to be carried in the hope of identifying the victim.
But officers are not expecting the examination to reveal a cause of death because the full body has not been found.

The remains were discovered in a secluded woodland area and are believed to have been there for 24 to 36 hours before they were found. They have not been identified.

At the moment the gender and age of the person are unknown, although police believe it was an adult, and there are no identifying marks on the remains.

It is understood there was no clothing on the body parts which could have assisted the police in identifying the victim. Currently, police do not know if the victim is local or has been killed elsewhere and part of their remains left in Salford.

A 20-year-old man arrested on Saturday evening on suspicion of murder in connection with the case has been released on bail.
