MISTRIAL WA - Four Parkland PD officers shot to death, 29 Nov 2009 *shooter killed, Driver 3rd hung jury*

<snip>

TACOMA -- The sister of cop killer Maurice Clemmons was ordered held on $1.5 million bail by a Pierce County Superior court judge Monday.

Latanya Clemmons is suspected of helping to hide the alleged get-away driver Darcus Allen after the shootings last week that killed four Lakewood police officers.
....

Police say Allen abandoned the pickup truck used to pick up Clemmons after the shooting, and took off in one direction while Clemmons took off in another.

Prosecutors allege that Latanya Clemmons helped Allen hide out while police were searching for him and for Clemmons. They say she continues to be uncooperative, and that's why the prosecutor asked for and received the high bail of $1.5 million.

.....

Even though Latanya Clemmons is being held on high bail, she hasn't yet been charged. She's due back in court on Wednesday with possible charges of rendering criminal assistance.

Allen also has not been charged. He's being held without bail on a fugitive warrant out of Arkansas where he and Clemmons were in prison together.

If Allen waves extradition, Lindquist says he's ready to proceed with other measures to keep Allen in the Pierce County jail. And depending on how much police determine he helped Clemmons, he could be charged with murder.

What ever happened to the report of a white male accomplice or driver? Darcus Allen is a black man. Every photo I've seen of family are of people of color. Have they dropped that possibility or is there still a monster on the loose?

I have a very hard time making any sense of Clemmons fiddling around with one of the fallen officer's wallets. Those cards would have been dead give-aways if used. I wonder if they were actually more of a trophy or that he wasn't looking for LE ID to use?

Concerning the family member who are known to have abetted Clemmons, has anyone noticed if they had rap sheets? It is almost beyond belief to me that family could/would support such despicable acts unless this was normalized in this family. Remember "family always comes first". Has there ever been a more insane statement?

I, too wonder about the properties and vehicles. I know that Clemmons owned a pressure washing business but how does that equal three houses? There's got to be a source of other income. I guess the other possibility is that he accrued them during the housing boom with little down.

Another search-warrant affidavit filed Thursday in Pierce County Superior Court indicates Clemmons was still within three miles of the coffee shop — and at one of three homes he owned — about five hours after the murders.

I think we all agree this is a multi-layered case....as strange as it gets.

I heard yesterday that Southern Oregon is sending officers to the memorial. I know the goal is to have 20,000 LE.

Thanks Texas Mist, The procession of police cars and local fire trucks is 10 miles long. Security is almost Presidential. Officers have come from all over the United States to join in honoring these 4 officers with a huge faction of the Royal Canadian Mounties from Canada. The head of the FBI is present, all the members of the officer's families and their friends and 4 white hearses following the slain officers patrol cars will join with and lead the 3 mile procession.

This is only a small amt of info, but it will take 3 hours for the motorcade to reach the Tacoma Dome where the memorial service will take place at 1 pm.

They say these 20,000 officers are like a family. God Bless them all. xox

I haven't watched a television in over 6 years but I had my husband set one up so I could watch today. Northwest Cable News is doing a fabulous job of covering this event. This is absolutely breathtaking and heart wrenching.

There are squad cars from EVERYWHERE--the procession is over 10 miles long!! Over 1000 Canadian Mounties are currently marching into the dome in perfect formation. They just announced that firefighters have taken over traffic control so that the police can take part in the ceremony. The caskets have been moved into the dome and the family members followed.

Mr. C had no earthly idea what the true meaning of family loyalty really is. I'm watching it in action. Bless them all. They're hurting so much.

Except the angels in blue. They're resting.

I just saw an Ashland, Oregon police car! At least two of our detectives which worked our case are there. I'm so pleased and proud that they went. The honor guard which are protecting the caskets change every ten minutes and are representing every state and several countries.

The procession of squad cars and buses are still leaving McChord and the drive is 10 miles long and directly past the Lakewood Police Dept. with a huge flag hung between crossed hook and ladders. They are going to hold off the memorial as long as they can to include as many officers as possible.

Memorial is about to begin...Mayor said that this entire ceremony is based upon the wishes of the family & police tradition.

News reporter saying prayers from around the world are coming in.

It has started with a huge group of bagpipers mardhing into the area up front by the caskets. So moving to listen to that, and now the color guard.

I got DBF to watch memorial w/ me for a while....even he started crying when the lights went out & only spotlights were on the caskets.

This memorial is very moving. Those officers were much loved & appreciated.

4 slain Wash. officers honored at memorial

TACOMA, Wash. — About 20,000 mourners, mostly members of law enforcement from Washington state and across the country, honored four slain officers who were remembered Tuesday as heroes and loving family members.

A procession of 2,000 cars followed the flag-draped caskets of Sgt. Mark Renninger and Officers Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold, and Greg Richards to the Tacoma Dome, where the memorial service was held. Several candlelight vigils have been held for the officers since the shooting on Nov. 29, but Tuesday's memorial service and procession are believed to be the largest in state history.

Hi Gibby, Yes, the Canadian presence was a surprise to me but I guess Wa. must work closely with them because of the border. I was also surprised they sang the Canadian national anthem, but didn't she do a supurb job? Did you see the up close shot of the 2 officials from the Mounties in BC? I didn't catch who they were, but I think they were in charge of the RCMP for BC. WOW, they were impressive. And the officer who sang Garth Brooks' " . .I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the Dance. He was really wonderful I thought.

It was a major ceremony with so much depth to it. I'm glad I watched the whole thing too ;}

Maurice Clemmons' sister charged in Lakewood officers case

TACOMA — The sister of Maurice Clemmons was charged Wednesday with helping to hide the man who allegedly drove Clemmons to the area where he killed four Lakewood police officers Nov. 29.

At a court appearance Wednesday afternoon, LaTanya Clemmons pleaded not guilty to four counts of rendering criminal assistance in the first degree. She was ordered held on $1.5 million bail.

LaTanya Clemmons, 34, who works at Swedish Medical Center and the Muckleshoot Casino, is one of five relatives and a friend of Maurice Clemmons' who have been charged with rendering criminal assistance in the aftermath of the slayings.

The seventh person in custody, Darcus D. Allen, lived with LaTanya Clemmons, according to court documents that don't describe the nature of the relationship.

Referring to the group as the "Clemmons Seven," Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist told reporters he did not expect any more arrests beyond the seven people accused of impeding investigators.

In charging documents, prosecutors allege LaTanya Clemmons paid for a Federal Way motel room for Allen and gave him bus money to leave the state after she learned he had information about the killing of the officers in a Parkland coffee shop.

Detectives are investigating Allen's role in driving Maurice Clemmons to and from a carwash near the coffee shop at the time of the shootings. In an exchange of gunfire, one officer wounded Clemmons.

Hundreds line up as Parkland coffee shop reopens

PARKLAND, Wash. (AP) - Hundreds of police officers and other customers lined up early Saturday for the reopening of the Washington state coffee shop where four officers were shot and killed two weeks ago.

A bagpiper played as the Forza Coffee shop opened its doors at 8:14 a.m., the time on Nov. 29 when Maurice Clemmons ambushed Lakewood Police Sgt. Mark Renninger and Officers Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold and Greg Richards.

Lakewood Police Chief Bret Farrar was the first customer. He hugged patrons who turned out to reclaim the shop from tragedy. Some waited up to three hours in line.

"It's just so heartwarming," Farrar said. "It really pounds home the point as to why we do this. It's a dangerous job and bad things happen sometimes, but we're out here to support the community and the community supports us."

The four officers, who made up a patrol squad, were sitting in the strip-mall coffee shop preparing for a Sunday shift when Clemmons, a felon with a long record in Arkansas and Washington, walked in the door and started shooting. Richards managed to struggle with him and got off a shot, striking Clemmons in the gut, before dying.

Another article (and 9 great photos) about the Forza Coffee House reopening:

"It's our responsibility to honor these guys the way they should be." Inside the store Saturday, as the staff hustled to serve everyone, about a half-dozen Lakewood police officers sat quietly in the spot where their colleagues were working on laptops when they were ambushed."

Make sure you look at all the photos. The very last one is a tear jerker. My guess is that those were their favorites. Once again, I just don't think Clemmons had any earthly idea how his evil would beget so much love and kindness.

Officer shootings in Wash. may lead to new laws

"Gov. Chris Gregoire has called on law-enforcement groups to meet next week to compile a list of potential changes to state law, policy or the state constitution, and to meet with her on Jan. 8. And one lawmaker already has a public hearing scheduled to discuss the circumstances surrounding one of the shootings."

"The bottom line is we owe it to our law enforcement personnel to do everything we can to make sure they're safe and secure out there," Gregoire said in a phone interview with The Associated Press."

"When you have a tragedy of this magnitude, you've really got to be thoughtful, you've really got to be deliberate," she said. "Your impulse is to just go enact legislation, but good intentions don't necessarily bring about good results. So I defer to those who have boots on the ground."

Hopefully, Washington will make the changes they need to help keep their officers safe.
