Windows XP going off market in June: What it means

I'm not getting Vista til I absolutely have to, as I hear nothing but bad things about it. I have XP Home Edition, should I consider upgrading to XP Pro?

It seems like Microsoft lays an egg every other OS release, lol. People stayed with Windows 98 because Me was so bad, now people are sticking with XP because Vista is so bad.

I have XP and can only hope that Vista is a lot better.
I'm running Vista and wish I still had XP! Some of the security "features" in Vista are just plain annoying. I've managed to disable the annoying pop-up box asking if your really want to do something. Life got a little better. Two gigs of memory helped. I also tweaked the startup using msconfig and that helped speed up the boot process. But, I still don't like it very much.

Oh I agree! Mac rules!:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: I LOVE my laptop! :D

Do you girls love the imovie/idvd stuff or what? I have so much fun with all that making video montages and burning them to DVD! I LOVE my Mac!

pc linux os gnome 2008

you don't need windows to run it. it's its own operating system.

Someone suggested linux ubuntu or mandriva because you don't have to load it on your machine. They both can run from CD. Trial without real commitment, until you know you like it.

I use Lotus spreadsheet, and Lotus Word, and MS Word, and don't know if they would work on Linux.

Or if you can import your previous work on Lotus and MS Word to the programs that come with Linux.

Anyone?

I can't afford Bill Gates any longer. I'm tired of getting sucked into a windows version, and then boomp! it's gone, and there won't be any updates for security, etc. I have XP Professional, and it's ok. My guru told me that you just simply had to reformat and reload XP at least once a year to keep it running "fast" ..

I was still using my old Windows 98 until some months ago. I was on Websleuths, went to the kitchen, and my computer was dead when I came back. Now I'm using our Windoes ME and don't even have XP. I'll be getting a MAC if I get a new computer if I can at all afford it.

Ah, but i have found a Mac (and its software) lasts for years and years. i got a new macbook this time last year because the mac i had been using was becoming slower as the aged do. and it was time. my old mac had been running for 8 years without a hitch other than the last year's issue of speed.

i urge you to invest in a mac because in the long run you'll be happy. :)

I have vista and hate it. No problems to date with it but hard to locate what I need on it since I am not use to it yet.

cheers all

Vista is the worst OS Windows has produced in many years. If they do not provide downgrade capabilities to Win XP, I will switch to a MAC OS. Or use Firefox, which is free, exclusively.

I have put off buying a new second notebook because of the Vista incompatibilities with many websites, applications and other Internet necessities. It is unstable and a member of my family, who has a career in computer engineering and design, says it is a terribly unstable product and that he will never use it.

There are alternatives. For the average computer user, Firefox OS and browser is the most user friendly. You can download it for free from www.firefox.com

It is a Mozilla browser and OS. My family member uses Linux, but I find it to be very plain and boring. Of course, I don't create web design either.

Go Mac: once you go Mac, you will never go back. :D That is how I handled my Windows situation, this past Winter... best investment move I have ever made when it comes to computing. My old laptop and desktop ran XP, and when I tried to move to Vista (after being warned by a Microsoft guy that it was very buggy), that was an utter disaster... even after upgrading my processors and ram. So... I took the jump to Mac and am so glad I did.

Mac OS is better now than it used to be, but it still concerns me that many games and other add on software programs are not Mac compatible. Most are labeled as Windows only, in fact. Why does the disparity still exist all these years later?

Also, I fail to see how Apple is able to justify the 3X price tag for their products. One drop of a notebook, and it's toast. I know, I dropped and shattered the only Mac product I have had, a fully loaded iBook a few years ago. It made me sick that for the same amount of money, I could have had 3 or 4 high quality Windows system notebooks instead of 1 broken Apple product.

I do agree with you that Vista sucks. MS Win. XP is very stable and reliable if you have the latest upgrades and patches, etc.

I think you can still get XP on a Dell if you order it directly. I did that a few months ago after all the XP units were off store shelves.
