There’s so little information. Am I understanding they were on the same ATV together? How did they get separated…. Did he fall off? Had they stopped and he ran off?

MASON COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — UPDATE: 5:30 p.m., 9/10/23

A missing juvenile in Mason County was found deceased on Sunday, Eyewitness News has confirmed from multiple sources.

Hundreds of people, including law enforcement and firefighters, had been involved in the search for 12-year-old Wyatt Niebert, which began Saturday afternoon and into Sunday morning.

The boy and his grandfather had been out squirrel hunting near Gallipolis Ferry on Saturday when the two became separated, deputies said.

Niebert’s grandfather went out to search for him on his own later that day on an ATV before crashing and injuring himself. Responding crews to the ATV accident were then alerted of the missing boy, according to deputies.

Niebert was discovered Sunday morning several miles off West Virginia Route 2.

Mason County Sheriff Corey Miller thanked all of the people who had helped during the search.

“We’ve had hundreds of people down here. Food, water, you know, volunteers, anything you could ask for,” Miller said. “It’s just been overwhelming from the community and we’d like to show our gratitude for that. I know the family’s grateful.”

The investigation into what exactly happened continues, and West Virginia State Police Crime Scene Units were on the scene most of Sunday at the brush covered location.

So sad. When I saw he and his grandfather got separated and that "Wyatt is dressed in all camouflage and was carrying a .22 caliber rifle" on yesterday's SO FB it made me wonder if he had a gun accident, like maybe he fell and his gun discharged. I'm sure more details will be released, but feel so sorry for his family especially his Mom "AN" who sounds completely devastated.
