WY - Gabrielle ‘Gabby’ Petito - Grand Teton National Park - MEDIA, MAPS *NO DISCUSSION - #2

Would Gabby Petito be alive today if warning signs of domestic violence had been acted on earlier?

This story previously aired on Sept. 17, 2022. It was updated on May 27, 2023.

Gabby Petito's road trip in the summer of 2021 started as an adventure story. Months later, it turned into a nationwide search for a missing woman before ending with the discovery of her remains in Grand Teton National Park.

It has now become a cautionary tale.

Mary Fulginiti: Ultimately her death … will hopefully lead to many women being rescued and saved from these situations, well before it gets to murder.

Could Gabby Petito's death have been prevented?

MAY 28, 2023

In the late summer of 2021, the story of 22-year-old Gabby Petito's disappearance spread quickly across social media and throughout the media. Headlines put a spotlight on the missing 22-year-old "van life'" video blogger, and on her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, who had returned home to Florida without her. Gabby's body was eventually found near a Wyoming campground, and a month later, Brian's remains were discovered in a Florida nature reserve. In a notebook found near Brian, he claimed responsibility for Gabby's death.

New York State Assemblyman Ed Flood (R-Port Jefferson) and State Sen. Anthony Palumbo (R-New Suffolk) continued to advocate for bipartisan legislation for the passage of “Gabby’s Law” Wednesday morning, along with the support of Gabby Petito’s family.

The bill would require police to issue a Teal Alert for missing adults who are believed to be in danger. It was introduced last week in honor of Petito, a 22-year-old Long Island woman who was murdered by her boyfriend in the summer of 2021.

“This shouldn’t be a partisan bill,” Flood said. “It shouldn’t matter that it says Republican next to my name. This is a bill that could save the lives of New Yorkers and could help New Yorkers save the lives of other potential victims nationwide.”

A Teal Alert would be similar to current missing person’s laws in place such as an Amber or Silver Alert, but this would be specifically designated to missing adults aged 18-64 and/or victims of domestic abuse.

VENICE, Fla. (WFLA) — Depositions begin this week in the lawsuit filed by the family of Gabby Petito against the parents of Brian Laundrie and their longtime family attorney.

Petito’s parents, Joe Petito and Nichole Schmidt, will be questioned by the legal teams for Chris and Roberta Laundrie and their attorney Steven Bertolino on Tuesday and Wednesday. It is unclear if the Laundries and Bertolino will be present for the depositions.

If the Laundries choose to appear, it will mark the first time the parents of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie are face-to-face since Petito’s murder and Laundrie’s suicide in 2021. [...]

[...] The trial is scheduled for May 13, 2024 in Sarasota County court.

Nichole Schmidt, #GabbyPetito’s mom, was deposed Tuesday in their lawsuit against the Laundries. Joe Petito’s deposition is happening now. The Laundries did not attend. Attorney Steve Bertolino, a co-defendant, was there, I’m told. The two families are yet to come face-to-face.
