The sheriff’s office blocked off Christie Road while it was conducting its search. After the bone was discovered, that changed the nature of the investigation along the roadway, said B.J. Fore, public information officer for the sheriff’s office.

“It’s a crime scene now,” he said.

The roadblocks will be left up over night Wednesday, and will remain up Thursday, when investigators return to the scene to continue the search, Fore said.

Christie Road, east of Hudson, was shut down for the second day in a row as investigators combed through the woods. Approximately 40 people began a methodical search of the area at about 9 a.m., despite the cold, rainy weather that persisted through the day.

“Obviously, we believe it may be (a human bone) because we have had people tell us it is consistent with a human bone, but we have no confirmation on that,” said Capt. Thurman Whisnant of the Hickory Police Department.

The bone was delivered to SBI lab Thursday to collect a DNA profile. It takes longer for the medical examiner to examine the bone than it does for the SBI lab to collect material for DNA. By delivering the bone to the SBI office first, the profile can be completed while the ME’s office conducts a separate set of tests, Whisnant said.
