Texas - Coronavirus COVID-19 #2

Texas reports largest daily COVID-19 increase as Greater Houston sees spike in cases
Houston's health authority said the situation in Greater Houston is getting worse by the day.

“Houston reported 972 more cases of COVID-19 on Friday and 844 more cases on Saturday.“

[...]

“There have been almost 400 new patients admitted to their hospitals with COVID-19 in the last two days.

The hospital stays for patients admitted with COVID-19 are not short.

“If you’re going to get better and go home, it’s about eight to 10 days,” Persse said. “But if you wind up in the intensive care unit, it can be 25 to 35 or longer.”

That is if the patient recovers.“

“HOUSTON – If Harris County continues on the same new case trajectory as it is on at present, Houston could become the worst affected city in the U.S., according to nationally recognized infectious disease expert, Dr. Peter Hotez of the Baylor College of Medicine.

In a tweet Saturday morning, Hotez said if things continue as they are, Harris County could rival the situation that is currently being seen in Brazil.

“If we continue on the same trajectory, my worry is Houston could become the worst affected city right now in North America,” Hotez said in an interview with KPRC 2.“

[...]

“Finally, his third prediction in his tweet was that the county “would need to proceed to red alert.” As of Sunday night, Harris County is listed at Orange Level 2 on the COVID-19 Threat Level System. This means there is a significant and uncontrolled spread of the virus in the county. To be upgraded to the Red Level 1 the spread of the virus would have to be classified as severe and uncontrolled.“

He also goes on to say how wearing a mask is not enough, and this is so important imo as Dr. Mike also still talks about how mask-wearing should be part of “comprehensive package”.

“I cannot really see how things get better on their own. In such case we must take steps to protect Houston - even if it means defying the "health freedom" antiscience crazies . I'm willing to take the heat - they don't care for me much anyway from my staunch defense of #vaccines

“On Friday, Houston reported 972 new cases, however, Mayor Sylvester Turner said this was due to a 2-week backlog in test result reporting by the state. Hotez told KPRC 2 Sunday that when he makes his projections and recommendations, he looks at a 7-day average in cases.

Hospital capacity

One set of data that is used to determine the severity of coronavirus in the area is hospital capacity and general and ICU bed usage. The South East Texas Regional Advisory Council (SETRAC) tracks that information for the Houston area.

As of Saturday, Houston area hospital capacity was:

  • 10.3% of general beds in Harris County hospitals were filled by COVID-19 patients
  • 22.8% of ICU beds in Harris County hospitals were filled by COVID-19 patients
You can see more data from SETRAC and use their interactive dashboard here.“

“HOUSTON — Texas Governor Greg Abbott acknowledged Monday there are some alarming coronavirus trends in Texas over the last week and the virus "must be corralled."

"COVID-19 is spreading at an unacceptable rate in Texas," the governor said.

Texas reported its largest daily increase in COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began on Saturday. Hospitalization numbers are up 126% statewide since Memorial Day.

When comparing the numbers in late May to the last five days, they've at least doubled across the board.”

[...]

"”If that spike continues, further action will be necessary," Abbott said. "We don't have to choose between jobs and health We can have both. We can protect Texans lives while also restoring their livelihoods."

Abbott said closing down Texas again will be the last resort but it could happen.

"If we do not start wearing masks to slow the spread of COVID-19, it could result in [businesses] actually having to close back down," Gov. Abbott said. "Our goal is to keep businesses open, to keep society engaged, and one of the most effective tools that we can do that is by people wearing masks."“

Gov. Abbott says 'tougher actions will be required' if COVID-19 case counts continue climb

“On Monday, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said the health department is reporting some of the highest numbers the city has had since the start of the pandemic.

"We are moving very fast and we are moving very fast in the wrong direction," said Mayor Turner. "The course that we are currently on is not in the best interest of our city or state."

Dr. Marc Boom, CEO and President of Houston Methodist, and a member of COVID-19 response in the Texas Medical Center said Methodist hospitals have seen triple the amount of COVID-19 patients in the month of June.“

Public safety impacted after dozens of firefighters, police quarantined due to COVID-19, chief says
According to Houston Fire Chief Sam Pena, 146 HPD officers have tested positive for the virus and more than 80 firefighters are currently in quarantine.

[...]

“"It is getting critical," said Chief Pena. "For the fire department, the numbers are even more pronounced."

Chief Pena said the Houston Fire Department has seen a 140 percent increase in firefighters needing to quarantine in the last 10 days.”

[...]

“Chief Pena and city leaders are pleading with the public to mask up, social distance and practice good hygiene.

"This is very real," said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. "This is a healthcare crisis."“

Houston mayor says city 'moving very fast in the wrong direction' as record cases reported

“Turner's remarks came as the city reported 1,789 new COVID-19 cases, adding to Houston's total of 14,322. Monday's total is the most the city has reported in one day so far.

"There were 1,789 new cases (over Sunday and Monday.) So this is, this is very real. This is a healthcare crisis. And quite frankly, your failure, for example, to wear masks and or to engage in social distancing directly impacts on somebody else," said a clearly exasperated mayor.“

I keep checking Texas because we have been wintering in San Antonio at an RV park. Winter is a ways off, but I am concerned.
