IMO LE has a probable theory in that the perp surprised Ian, they struggled, the perp killed him and then...?

They have Al's GPS info so it seems like they should be able to narrow down likely areas he may have placed Ian (I am guessing he did drive somewhere). I wonder if they have tried scent dogs trained to find burn piles?
