I mean, there’s clearly some element of this that’s complex and ongoing - I just don’t know how you make the leap to “South Asian gang shakedown” being the most likely option here, particularly given that the suspects very much look white.

Poor phrasing. “Gangs that are into racketeering of South Asian businesses”, i presume.

Very sad if it happens in Canada.

Ohhh this makes more sense. I still don’t know that I’m sold on this: from what I’ve read in many of those extortion cases the demands seem to be for more money and the threats/violence seem a little more “hands off (calls/texts, arson, shooting into parking lots when the business is closed for the night, etc.) vs. dining in and beating someone to death. But it’s hard to make a judgement without knowing what the staff and witnesses have told police about what exactly these guys said and did during their entire visit.

I agree. The guys may look more menacing en face, but from the back one can’t make a solid judgment. However, they might be “wannabe gangstas” set up by an adult, or some friends who are older and more serious. Good luck to Ontario LE.

Can someone summarize things for me? I'm having trouble reading between the lines. 3 men were arrested? TIA

Arrests were made on July 30th, but not announced until a few days ago. As IamShadow said above we don’t know much else about them yet.

No idea what the charges will be.

We haven’t been told why, only that there are complicating factors. The Owen Sound Homicide unit and OPP worked the case.

Sharif is referenced in this recent, alleged 'dine and dash ' case in Ontario.

“I’ll f—ing knock you the f— out,” a stocky man wearing sunglasses shouts at a much larger male waiter. “You don’t own me. You don’t know me. And you don’t know what I can do. Get the f— away from me.”
The waiter in the video, Robbie Martin, who didn’t serve the table, kept his cool and said he was merely trying to remind the people they had not paid their bill.''

The waiter did a good job keeping his cool but it’s not lost on anyone the potential danger he faced. Alleged dine-and-dash incidents can end in injury or death.

Ontario saw that in Owen Sound last year when, as the Sun’s Brad Hunter reported, popular Sharif Rahman, 44, owner of The Curry House, died a week after an alleged attack that is said to have resulted over a dispute of an unpaid dinner bill Aug. 17, 2023.''

In Canada, they don’t necessarily give out information until the trial.

The Canadian system follows the British system, not the American one.

You will hear when it’s made available.

I think, IIRC, the police are still working on the case, so they don’t say a word.

''The city announced on Monday that nine cameras had been installed late last week in areas of the River District, the first phase of a three-year camera pilot program approved by council earlier this year. The program is in response to public calls for more safety measures following the deadly assault of downtown businessman Sharif Rahman in August 2023.''

Perhaps this case needs its own thread? Paging dotr! :)

One interesting thing in there is that the cook said the bill was actually closer $150 (not $40), and that they didn’t come close to finishing their food before trying to leave.

Overall though, based on the facts available, this really sounds like a pretty standard dine and dash by three (possibly young and possibly drunk) guys that had an awful and tragic outcome. The lawyers interviewed seem mystified by what the OPP’s reason for the secrecy could be, and I’m just as confused.
