I had wondered why he had told his wife that he had a big business deal. He didn't need to say anything if he just wanted to leave. Now it makes sense. He said it in order to ensure someone else picks up the kids.

Picante knows more than I have read. For example, that his wife is a teacher and that he was supposed to pick up the kids. This explains why he told his wife he would be late leaving work, so she could pick up the kids that day. This shows further pre-planning.
