Maybe telling them off the record prevents them from trying to find it out on their own, in sneaky ways, that they could then report

Yeah, the way the journos are reacting... 'oh oh. guys, this isn't good' I don't think any journalist there would have been shocked to find out she had been killed. Everybody was expecting that. It must be something worse.

11.03pm: ABC reporters have confirmed that Jill Meagher is dead. Body is yet to be found. http://www.reddit.com/r/melbourne/comments/10k0q7/man_arrested_in_jill_meagher_case/c6e4kmz I'm guessing evidence found at his house. Perhaps the blue hoodie, with bloodstains?

It's interesting... obviously it's been the key to finding BH, but then they also say it doesn't help prevent crime (it didn't save Jill)... and I don't really want Australia to turn into a police-state like the UK... I'm really conflicted on this

"The missing woman had returned to Drogheda, in Ireland, three weeks ago to catch up with her family and friends." In a tiny way it's good that she had a chance to go home and see her friends one last time.

a lot of people think the media - especially the herald sun - are essentially corpse flies. Maybe they feel like their condolences are for TM and family personally and don't need to be said in a public forum

My last little shred of hope was that she'd been killed quickly, and not had to experience that. Goodbye, little shred.

If we lived in a culture where women weren't constantly being told they need to not drink or go out or flirt or wear pretty clothes if they don't want to be held responsible for being raped then you could say what you like. But that is the culture we DO live in. But what you said has context...

Some people have been saying - what if BH is innocent but hasn't come forward because he doesn't pay attention to the media? There are posters of Jill EVERYWHERE around Brunswick (and Northcote, etc) - he might not have seen the CCTV footage but he could not have avoided seeing her face. He...

In defence of her husband: Jill and Tom's house has CCTV. Jill wasn't seen coming home and Tom wasn't seen leaving until the time he said he went out to look for her. "The Victoria Police have also entirely ruled out any suspicion of Jill Meagher's husband Tom, and declared he is not a person...

I wouldn't. A lot of people would feel really weird about calling 000, I know I do. I did it once, witnessing a serious thing from my window, and even then i was worried i was wasting police time and i had to tell myself over and over that i was allowed to call, thats what 000 is for, etc
