I am just trying to figure out why the murderer would go to all of the trouble of driving 12 miles out of town, carefully placing the bodies on the ground, but not burying them. It's still possible that the perp may have been somewhat familiar with the area, but still placed the bodies in an...

The consensus, of which I agree, is that Mattie & Patty were murdered elsewhere than where their bodies were found. If the location is "rock with very little dirt covering the rock", then burial would not be possible. But remember that it is likely that the bodies were laid down at the spot...

Do you think that the killer(s) was/were trying to bury the bodies, but got interrupted? They obviously weren’t dumped. In most rape/murders of strangers, the body is thrown to the ground. Generally, the female is face down. Here both victims were face up and separated by at least 50 feet...

Post 526 is of an August 20, 1961 newspaper article titled "Will Girl's Murder Join List of Unsolved Crimes?" In it there is the statement "Those countless leads to date have not turned up a definite clue to the identity of the killer. They may never do so." This is only one week after the...

Legacy, I have a lot of doubt, too, regarding Mr. Bunnell's eyewitnessing. It was completely dark at 9 PM (MST - no daylight savings time in 1961) in Carlsbad on August 11. Bunnell repeats that he really couldn't see the two that got in the car. He's guessing that they are teenage girls and a...

The triple murder occurred 36 miles east of Carlsbad on Hwy 180/62.

Charles Cox, the Artesia teacher was found south of Roswell decapitated in December 1960. He was a resident of Eddy County, but he may have been murdered in Chaves County. A Mr. Leonard (do not know first name) from Arkansas was shot three times and his body dumped south of Whites City. These...

It appears there were eight unsolved murders in Eddy County (or close by) from 1957 until 1961. Did they actually solve any?

Also from Estrada, Page 9 - "He [Bunnell] stated that he could hear giggles and squealing from the girls." I don't think Bunnell ever indicated that was an initial forced abduction. Also, there really is no suspicious statements or behavior on the part of Mr. Bunnell. Going back to Illinois...

Proudsolver - from the Estrada investigation, page 9 - "Mr. Bunnell when asked if the girls sounded frightened at the time the contact was made stated that they didn't sound to be frightened." This means they knew the person in the car or at least were comfortable and there was no struggle.

Six unsolved murders in the Carlsbad area from 1957 through 1961 would probably be the highest rate in the entire country during this period. The murder rate in the USA started a substantial increase in 1965 and actually peaked in 1980. This is mainly due to baby boomers (born 1945-1964)...

From the Estrada files - "Chief McCandless produced a green hanging file that contained some 41 documents that consisted of letters, a statement, evidence sheet, a catalog of guns, 12 pictures, and 1 newspaper clipping." SAY WHAT? A case of this type (involving thousands of interviews) should...

Regarding the ABQ Journal article of 9/14/61 - "A 20-year-old Carlsbad youth was released to the custody of his parents. He was released on condition his parents take him to ABQ for a psychiatric examination. ...results of the lie detector test were inconclusive." Is this DB? A 20 year-old...

Legacy, thanks so much for finding all the newspaper articles and posting them. Next to Sushine's posting of the Estrada investigation, the at-the-time articles have been the best information on this case.

"I want to crawl away and die." These haunting words of Mattie's mother really represent this case. After 48 years still so tragic.

In a search of "Artell Blair", I came across a profile at mylife.com. It listed Artell E. Blair, 87, at 606 N. Olive Street, Carlsbad, 505-885-5810. Relatives listed were Kenneth Blair, 60 and Willie D., 90. I could not obtain more info without paying, so I passed. Wilie D. was born in 1918...

Nancy Mosley actually describes a "husky, middle-aged" man. Linda Lou Roberts describes a "dark haired man in a t-shirt". Again these tend to rule out Earl Nichols who would have been 73 at the time (possibly with a mustache and beard) and does not seem to be the type to wear a T-shirt...

Nancy Mosley and Linda Lou Roberts describe a lurking elderly man with dark hair in a chevy with NM plates. Earl Nichols would not have dark hair, but graying and would not have a car with NM plates. But elderly does not describe David Blair.

I still think that a male's DNA profile can be extract from the original girl's clothing. DNA technology has advanced from 2003. I not even sure the technician was given every piece of clothing to work on. I still think David Blair, with or without help, was the killer. But I am far from...

I don't live in Carlsbad, but in Los Alamos, NM. Hopefully, I can get down to Carlsbad this month. I want to visit and take pictures at some of the points of interest involved in this unsolved murder. Carlsbad is still the nation's largest producer of potash, employing over 1500. In 1961...
