That makes sense. I was wondering what the perpetrator was doing for 9 hours in the same area before the phone was switched off! It would be really nice to know when the last ping actually happened.
I can't work out why people say the phone was turned off at 5 pm. If the last ping occurred then, in approx the same area as the incident, which presumably occurred at about 8.30 am, then the perpetrator would have had to hang around the same area for about 9 hours and then turn the phone off...
It seems to me that the simplest explanation is that the poor lady had a medical incident and staggered off the track before collapsing. I can think of a couple of fairly recent cases here in NSW where (admittedly elderly) people have disappeared off bush tracks and have been found months later...
