Indeed. The fight to live/survive is innate. He is strong enough to overpower them, but my assumption is they had to be in a deep sleep.

The voice will creak, croak, or rattle. It's easier to hear than describe, so google "vocal fry" and you'll find videos with examples (or listen to NK interview, she speaks with "vocal fry").
