I remembered the court record containing the DUI and wondered if he had a license. IL DUIs often result in revocation. This one didn't.
So apparently he had a valid license at the time of the disappearance and could legally have driven to Southern Illinois.
It seemed worth checking.
Court records (08TR049288) show the issuance of a "Judicial Driving Permit" after his DUI conviction (10/10/2008--issuance; 03/26/2009 --termination.) It appears he has his license now.

Did JAL say he was at work? I thought he said at home, but somehow involved with work. I'd read that to mean on call. That's a tad less airtight, IMO.
