My guess is the checkpoint was setup by authorities to catch them. Get them isolated, together, away from their home and in a vulnerable position. Rarely to police accidently find people/drugs/weapons during a traffic stop. There's a tip or a plan.

Because they owned the house together, maybe they were still living together. They were broken up but he could have had a new girlfriend that showed up and discovered the scene.
It's in a different State. Who has jurisdiction over government owned parks? Could be someone hoping the location + crossovers with LE or Park Rangers who aren't experienced with complicated crimes may quickly rule it a suicide.
