"PhD candidate" simply means that one has passed their comprehensive/qualifying exam and is continuing toward completing their PhD. If he was in his fourth year before dropping out, he very likely had already taken the qualifying exam (typically occurs in the second year).

Did anyone else notice that this article: http://www.philly.com/philly/news/new_jersey/175652991.html?page=2&c=y quotes someone who Autumn called out as "fake" in her facebook profile? Out of all the people they could interview, that seems a little strange.
