Shock twist in case of accused killer cop Beau Lamarre-Condon that could cost Aussies a fortune​

“A shock twist in the alleged double-murder case against accused killer cop Beau Lamarre-Condon means taxpayers could now foot his astronomical legal bill.

But a surprise late twist could mean massive legal delays and may cost taxpayers almost $1million if the 28-year-old decides to plead not guilty.

His solicitor, John Walford, a former detective who spent 20 years in the NSW Police Force, was set to appear on Lamarre-Condon's behalf next Monday.

A plea could have been entered at the hearing in Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court and the case could then be committed for trial.

But Legal Aid NSW has now told Mr Walford that it has taken over Lamarre-Condon's defence after he applied for public funding.

Until now, Lamarre-Condon's family has been paying for his representation but they are said to be unable to afford to fund a long trial which could cost up to $800,000.

They recently applied for Legal Aid funding and that request now appears to have been granted.

Sources told Daily Mail Australia that if Lamarre-Condon, currently behind bars on remand, pleads not guilty and went to trial the hearing could last up to four months.

With a defence team of a senior and junior counsel and a solicitor, he would be facing an estimated legal bill of at least $800,000.

It is likely Legal Aid will have to start from scratch with its case defending Lamarre-Condon, meaning that a trial date might not be set until next year, and not proceed until 2026.”

I attended Downing centre court today. Lamarre Condon appeared via AVL for a short time, before Magistrate Clare Farnan told him that he wasn’t required. The alleged murderer was dressed in snug fitting prison green tshirt and was well groomed. He looked very well, clear eyed and very alert. He looked just like his photos prior to being charged with murder.

The magistrate explained to the court that a family member of one of the victims wished to dial in to hear the proceedings, so the matter waited until that person could be contacted. Eventually a gentleman dialed in, and the case was continued. Lamarre’s solicitor, John Walford was granted leave to withdraw as Legal Aid was taking over the matter.

Because Legal Aid needed to become familiar with the case, it has been adjourned until 19th November for mention.

Legal aid stated that a forensic psychiatrist has been requested to assess the alleged murderer but no appointment is available until February or March of next year. The DPP was arguing that they weren’t convinced that it took so long to obtain a such an appointment.

The Legal aid solicitor spoke very softly, so it was quite difficult to hear her. Even her name was hard to hear but I think it was Ms Kernick.

Major twist for alleged killer cop facing double murder charge

Beau Lamarre-Condon faced Sydney Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday after spending more than eight months behind bars on remand.

Lamarre-Condon's new lawyer Rachel Durmush told the court that Legal Aid had received the majority of the evidence against its client.

She asked for a two week adjournment to confirm they had received the entire brief and liaise with the Crown prosecution about the next steps.

The court was told Legal Aid had initially sought a staggering five-month adjournment in order to obtain a report from a forensic psychiatrist, but the Crown opposed the lengthy delay.

Crown prosecutor Brendan Donnelly explained it was not clear why an appointment could not be made sooner or whether the psychiatrist's report would even be ready by March next year.

He said a shorter adjournment would give the parties an opportunity to 'create a realistic timeline' and allow the Crown to form a position on whether a longer adjournment is necessary.
