South Florida legislator crafts 'Caylee's Law'



5:35 p.m. EDT, July 6, 2011

TALLAHASSEE — Less than 24 hours after a jury cleared Casey Anthony of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, Florida lawmakers signaled their intent to tighten child welfare laws.

Rep. Bill Hager, R-Boca Raton, said Wednesday that he's drafted a proposed law to make it a felony for a parent or legal guardian to fail to report a missing child in a timely manner. And several other lawmakers are looking at legislation as well.

Assistant State Attorney and a prosecutor in the murder trial of Casey Anthony, Linda Drane Burdick, has filed what is known as a Motion to Tax Special Costs of Investigation and Prosecution and to Reserve Jurisdiction.

According to the motion, Florida law provides that, "in all criminal cases the costs of prosecution, including investigative costs by law enforcement agencies, shall be included and entered in the judgement rendered against a convicted person."

Campaign to create 'Caylee's Law' growing

The shocking verdict in the Casey Anthony trial is pushing some people to action.

A petition for a campaign called "Caylee's Law" started shortly after the verdict was read. In 24 hours, it has more than 75,000 signatures from people in all 50 states.

Attorney Joe Touger was not surprised by the proposed law.
