I agree.

Seems so strange to keep that in his vehicle unless he smokes cigarettes. Unless he took that with him to MO for CWW's wedding/reception and never bothered to take it back in the house. Hopefully he did pull that lighter out at the reception and JR and CWW's fingerprints are all over it as well as MS's.

Maybe he used the lighters for his fireworks.

Yes, same type. Thanks irishchook.

It could be argued that the individual pry marks on the door are actually pairs caused by a pry bar with the nail notch. In other words, the gap between two marks would be where the notch is. However, the size of the marks, if that were the case, looks too large to match up with these pry bars. I can't be sure without a scale measurement of the tool to compare to a scale photo of the marks. I know we have a scale photo of the marks, but I don't recall seeing any scale photos of the pry bars.

ETA: One more thing that looks inconsistent with the flat pry bar is the taper of the impressions. The impressions seem to taper away from the leading edge. The flat pry wides away from the leading edge (particularly in the v-notch) whereas the mechanics pry bar tapers like the impressions.

This seems to be a cable (2) connected to the water softeners located outside. Here is a photograph that barely captures the cables, but you can see what I mean:

What day did they leave for Connecticut? The receipts are dated 06/25/2015. It was printed at 6:01 p.m.

Great thoughts Scout! I was trying to check exactly that and was lacking the size of all pry bars conveyed to the crime scene..

That bar found in the motorcycle bag I am sure had been mentioned in MSM. If it was in the docs - other than the report you found- I would have located it by now. So I am with you, the tool has not been matched to the broken in garage side door, that we know of.

When I saw the picture you posted of the tools, I compared the V notch in many different bars, since the initial marks on the door seem to suggest a "pair like" symmetrical pattern of initial impact:

However, the frame definitely shows a single impact area:

Therefore it is very possible, that - as you suggested - the tool used to pry open this door may have been a mechanic's bar or perhaps a flat tire tool like this:

I'm really curious about this refund. As told by a previous patient, Mark wasn't too keen on negotiating fees/argumentative (and was reported to Medicare as a result). This was the night before they left presumably plunking down quite a bit of $$ in airline fees for the four of them. Why would this need to be done NOW? Why couldn't it wait? Interesting..

Maybe he used the lighters for his fireworks.

Maybe, but would it be in the van? Is MS known for showing up at functions with fireworks instead of a dish to pass or a bottle of wine? And if that is his MO wouldn't the lighter be in the back of the van?

I think of several home uses for it including fireworks, candles, drugs, grilling. But it's strange to keep it in a van used to shuttle kids unless it's for lighting cigarettes.

Maybe the shotgun lighter is a redneck's alternative to a zippo lighter. Both would produce a stronger flame than a Bic lighter and last longer. Someone could drive with the window down and still light a cigarette.

He's not a 16 year old kid. 16 year old kids smoke joints in the car. Adults tend to smoke marijuana at home or at a friend's home.

Campfires at the beach maybe?

Didn't we read from some of the Missouri folks that CWW did mechanic work on cars? Maybe traveled with his tools? The staging of the break in and everything else is so obviously amateur - love that these guys (MS and CWW) think they are the smarter people in the room and have too much hubris to even recognize what they don't know.

Could the pry marks have been made with the claw part of the hammer?

Yes. He even told investigators that he spent the weekend in question working on a vehicle for Christian Taylor who owns the trailer park where CWW and AW lived.

Maybe for lighting a grill at a park (CWW's wedding) but in a lot of areas of the country a bonfire on a public beach would be illegal. I think in some areas you might be able to get a permit but that's would probably be more for an organization having a party.

Yes, that's what I was referring to. However, the marks aren't exactly aligned like I'd expect them to be if they were pairs. And the distance between them may not be consistent from pair to pair. I'd have to examine more closely to be certain, but I don't believe they are pairs.

I think a heavier duty tool like the mechanics pry bar did that significant damage to the door. JMO.

One thing of note is that Dr. Petrites made no mention of such a cloth in describing the scene as he found it. From his statements, it seems that he had an unobstructed view of TS's head since he described that it appeared she had been bashed in the back of the head.

The detectives and officers who were first on the scene described no such cloth either. Reference their sworn affidavits in TS_Documents 1 Searchable Combined.
Yes, so that pretty much eliminates a pillow over her head, unless they "graciously" took it off before leaving.

There are people for whom the novelty of a lighter that looks like a weapon would be amusing. Picturing MS pointing this towards his face amuses me. :dunno:

I don't know how he would explain keeping it down by his driver's seat if he's not a cig smoker.

:bang: :giggle:

I googled rifle lighter and a few popped up - one is a 9" rifle, and also a mini machine gun lighter.

Nine inches seems awkward to try and aim at your face.

Maybe that "rifle" lighter was left by MS in the van for his buddy JRR as a gift. JRR was so into his t-shirts, plaque and new Wal Mart clothes, and was dense enough not to see this was left for him, he simply left it behind.

Apologies if this has been mentioned, but I noticed in the airport photos her dress looks striped blue. In the crime scene photos it's orangey. am I wrong? Or is it because of the other macabre thoughts I cant even type...

When would JRR ever be inside the van to get it or use the rifle lighter? If MS was leaving him a gift, why not place it in an easier to get to place like inside the motorcycle saddlebag? Can you imagine pulling along side a police officer at an intersection and whipping out your 15"L rifle lighter? These guys just dare for trouble. It's in their blood. JRR always loved guns. Always.

JR purchased the red Budweiser Tshirt for his girlfriend, TS. When he learned that CWW had been visited by LEO, he took her red Budweiser Tshirt and his new black shoes purchased in the FL WalMart and threw them away.

Can you imagine: My boyfriend went to FL to kill a doctor and all I got was this lousy Budweiser Tshirt?

How could JR ever have thought that would be a nice momento for his expectant gf?

I only saw one motorcycle helmet but that beauty was made for a lady to ride high on the seat behind MS. Do you suppose Teresa ever rode the bike with MS? By choice, I quit riding motorcycles when I became a grandmother several years ago.
