Wow. I hope people are getting to higher ground.

NEW WARNINGS ISSUED...will hit other parts of the South Island soon. The tsunami arrived (6 feet) in the north-eastern coast about two hours later. Officials said the first waves may not be the largest, with tsunami activity possible for several hours.

Tsunami gauges have recorded a sizeable tsunami wave of around 2 metres according to the Kaikoura gauge. Now much smaller, but still very dangerous, tsunami waves are showing up in WELLINGTON, CASTLEPOINT.

THIS IS AN ACTIVE WARNING and WeatherWatch.co.nz is in talks with GeoNet this morning as we update you.

Others have taken to social media to offer people a safe bed for the night.

Looks like no more tsunami warnings. New Zealand is an incredible country in so many ways. Beauty . Socially. But so many earthquake issues.

This video is from Feb 2011.

Today's main one occurred just after midnight.

Their narration is a HOOT!!

Clarence River in Kaikoura, New Zealand, breaches its banks; residents told to immediately move to higher ground - NZ Stuff

Humm I wonder if tonight's supermoon has anything to do with this?

just another crazy thought!!

Watching some videos, uncomfortable feeling. And it occurred to me unlike tornado, hurricane, tusamni, fire you just do not know if it is the beginning the middle the end, if its just a commercial for the main event .

And all those poor people after or during every aftershock its the same cycle over again.

You never know when it is "safe" again for a bit. It creeps up - kinda like a knob on a stereo - how loud is it gonna get " this Time"

Quite unsettling I would imagine

The narration may be a hoot but "Dudes" in the video are idiots. Are they auditioning for a Darwin Award? FWIW They sound more American than Kiwi IMO.
