I got curious. I looked this up on various sites.

South Africa abolished the Death Penalty in 1995. Before 1995, they
had a very high rate of execution by hanging. Now, their prisons are
grossly overcrowded with a shortage of staff. Most inmates have to opt
for Legal Aid being too poor for a defense team. Sounds like BSS is
probably relieved he gets to do the rest of his lifetime in an American
prison.

Ah, but Alaska has overcrowding also. In fact, there's no Federal prisons
there, only state prisons. If it's a federal crime, prisoners get sent to an
Oregon prison. I guess they could transfer him to do his time in another
U.S. state anyways? He no longer controls his fate.

Tired now, enough with the curiosity!

Then, Merzerie said she was good at timelines and started one. :)

 Can't remember when. Can't find exact date.

He killed Kathleen before September 7th. All the news articles keep saying he was naturalized as an American citizen last month, meaning also September, but most likely after he killed Kathleen. IMO, he committed these crimes before he was a citizen and could have been deported according to what he himself said on Quora. You're probably right we're stuck with him in an American prison, but the whole thing of him immigrating to the good life only to end lives makes me sick.

"Smith came to Alaska from South Africa five years ago, according to the document, but only became a naturalized citizen of the United States last month. "
'Quiet' SA man charged with killing multiple women in Alaska | Independent on Saturday

Sept 20th he became a citizen. Sept 30th the memory card was found. October 3rd? Kathleen was found and identified shortly after. Oct 8th? I believe he was arrested so yeah he committed when he was a green card holder which is pretty gutsy cause yes he could have been deported although I’m not 100 percent on the legalities there of that. They may charge you first then hand you back to the authorities of your home country?

Thanks everyone for the interesting comments. It helps me keep on the facts. This is a very very sad, but interesting case.
With multiple murders (even if at the first trial they get the death penalty), they can still have multiple trials for multiple victims.
It almost happened with Shaun Grate in Ohio. He got the death penalty in one county (the first trial).
But then the neighboring county STILL charged him, but he pled guilty to those charges so the second trial didnt happen. I'm thinking it's up to the area/counties if they want to pursue charges.
Now, internationally, we'll probably still keep him. We have immigrants here in jail. Of course,
it would be worked out presumably by the various countries. Trials are highly expensive, and sometimes it's a real challenge to extradite. I'm doubtful our country will let go of him. But that remains to be seen.

Brian Smith has been married, for years, and is now a USA citizen; He apparently has a public defender...
Hope his wife has a prenup so he has no access to her funds...
Would it be possible to go after his wife’s house, and funds, for legal defense fees?
Perhaps she should try to have an annulment; due to apparent manipulated marriage to a con artist and violent murderer...
If he could kill these homeless women with no remorse, I am sure he could make his wife homeless and care less...
Any history of prior marriage/relationships with women; his age or decades older?
He appears to need a “beard” as cover for his true passion...
IMO

I think that the innocent spouse is not usually responsible, and that she probably will file for divorce or a dissolution.
The thought of her getting an annulment is very intersting. I hope so (due to fraud). No doubt she has a lawyer working her through all this
(But this is all just my guessing by googling).

We need an immigration attorney in here. His wife worked in an immigration capacity of some sort and she probably knows what to guard against now. He put her in a terrible situation. I hope she doesn't lose her house and retirement savings on this guy. Not worth a ukulele! He turned out to be a real burden for the U.S.A. too.

From my Post# 251 quote BSS says in his own words: "i have a financial sponsor who has to pay any debt that I cant pay for the first 10 years that I am in the US. I have to prove that I will in no way be a burden on the US system."

Oh yes! The sponsor....

Oh boy. Doing a bit of research. Called googling. Lol
The $500,000 sounds right. Soon to go up.
I think that's what is paid to the US. Any ideas about that @Curious Me
There's an article online you might find interesting...
Thinking about immigrating to US from SA: Now is the time'.

BBM think I found the article you mentioned. I didn't google it though, I "binged" it.

South Africans who want to immigrate to the United States and get a green card it now takes a $500K investment, but that will go up to over a million soon. I'm not sure if that meant the sponsor, because I doubt BSS invested that. He said he had to pay $6-7K of his own money for medical tests, etc.,

It goes to show how being allowed to become a U.S. citizen is an opportunity that one should not blow by killing people. Plus someone willing to be a sponsor must really trust you, so don't go killing people.

'Why did he do it?': Family of murdered Alaska Native woman faces alleged killer in court
This was already posted, but it's one of the more recent news articles about him.

I agree about the comments about his bail. He already confessed to killing two women. Don't just raise his bail. IMO, definitely NO BAIL.

Any idea when the shirtless pic was taken? He's obviously not at a pool.

Aydrianna523, I'm not sure when the pic was actually taken. It looks like he's in a bathroom? I think it was the first pic on his fb page. I want to guess it was either 2013 or 2014. That pic and the "chick magnet" truck kind of makes me wonder if he was ever on any dating sites at any time. How'd he meet the two women he killed?

IMO anyone who can keep severed heads on their walls and call it decor IS creepy. (A severed head is a severed head, even if you call it a "trophy" ).

I had to go back and look for what you were talking about. I think you mean the animal heads? I agree it's a sick décor. Hate it and it's ugly with all those animal heads. But to be fair, that isn't his home, but as I recall, it's their friend's lodge they stayed at while vacationing.
