That's a good question, and I don't have a good answer.
In the serial killers I've been around, they realized they were different(evil?) about the time of puberty....Apparently, the sex drive compounds their rage. Depending on the intellectual level, some may conclude they are deviant in nature. Edmund Kemper recognized his deviance at an early age. They love to talk about their crimes. I would say that killers like Kemper are very aware of their deviance.
As for the simple rapist/murderer, I don't know if they ever think of themselves as deviant. They certainly don't express it. The ones I know felt entitled. Upon paroling, sometimes I would ask what they would do if they saw a female that emoted feelings and how they would handle it. They said, "I would just take her". In their world, their feelings are all that's important. I don't think they ever think of themselves as deviant. They spend a lot of time defending themselves if they are asked about the crime.
Pedophiles seem to think that the children want it as much as they do, sometimes more. I don't think they think they are deviant at all and don't know if they think in those terms. They feel wrongly judged and convicted. They do their time quietly w/o creating any problems for staff. They don't talk about their crime or problems. Staff don't like to talk to them either. Work needs to be done on this problem. It is difficult for staff to work with them because it is very draining. It eventually takes it toll on the staff who try.
Thanks, Whisperer!
Rapists/killers recognizing deviance, "simple" rapists expecting entitlement, pedophiles thinking the children want it. All so unsettling, baffling, yet intriguing.
As a school teacher, and per my own principles, I want to think that deviant behavior we see in students can be corrected.
However, I have seen students, one in particular stands out to me, that really seems like someone who is destined to become, one or two of these. Cold hearted, remorseless, etc.
I see how onset of puberty can be a catalyst. And I worked predominantly with 4th and 5th graders. 9, 10, 11 year olds are maturing sexually, and the behaviors were already being witnessed by me.
Many people who have gone through what they call a "rough childhood" do not exhibit these behaviors, so environmental factors are possibly only one of, but not
the driving factor in deviant development.
Therefore, I can't help thinking it is chemical (as in brain/body), and possibly genetic.
Since there is no evidence of propagating the species, I wonder what use they are, and why they have not been weeded out of the Darwinian gene pool.

Just thoughts of mine.
Sorry to be O/T.
But trying to get into the mind of IK brings these questions/perceptions to my mind.
