There is not a problem getting locals to help search. They are waiting for there turn to search. There are so many people that are searching.

Yes, this article shows there are many, many concerned searchers and that is so heartwarming. I hope he is still safe and is found soon. "Come on in Sawyer".

"Tim Despain, public information officer for the Alaska State Troopers, said more than 900 people — by ground, air and horseback — searched for Cipolla on Sunday. He noted the outpouring of support from residents of Kodiak had reached historic levels when compared to other missing person searches around the state.

“Usually, there is a large [number] of people who are concerned and are willing to help, but this is significant,” Despain said.

That has been especially apparent at Bayside Fire Station, which is serving as search headquarters. On Monday morning, people arrived at 7 a.m. and were split into 20 teams to begin the third day of searching. Awaiting for them when they came back to headquarters were tables loaded with food and drinks donated by businesses and residents."

As a Kodiak resident who knows and loves Sawyer, I can’t express how many people miss and desperately want to find him. We are broken. But the response in Kodiak has been completely overwhelming. Everyone is helping. The agencies coming in to help are in awe of our local response. And just so everyone can understand, Kodiak is a remote island. The terrain in the Monashka area is blocks from the ocean with steep cliffs, dense forest, ravines, rivers, mountains, and lots of old wells from WWII. We are lucky to have a huge Coast Guard base who assisted immediately. But all the other resources had to be flown in from other areas.

Other articles have said that he is the son of Tim DeSpain. From previous links:

The Kodiak Police Department and the Alaska State Troopers are asking the Kodiak public for assistance with locating an autistic 7-year-old boy named Sawyer DeSpain

AST says that Sawyer, the son of the AST’s Public Information Officer Tim DeSpain,
was last seen on Forest Drive off of Three Sister’s Way at just after noon, when last seen, he was wearing gray pants and a camouflage top.

Maybe he is Tim DeSpain's step-son.,,,or maybe the press got it wrong. In any case, the name on the missing poster -- Cipolla -- must be the correct one.
He is no relation to DeSpain, that must’ve been a media mix up.

It has been very impressive and heartwarming to hear about the response of the Kodiak community. I'm praying for a miracle for Sawyer, his family and all of you who love him.

Hopefully the Incident Command Group has an experienced Search Manager that can calculate the probability of detection for the various grid search areas.
Yes, it has been the biggest SAR in Alaska, ever. There has been over 40 air hours with infrared and night vision, dog teams, and so many experienced agencies. They had rescue divers and helos on the coast within 30 minutes. Air and ground searches continue. The ground/grid searches are teams of fit volunteers led by someone experienced in SAR.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined the list of agencies searching for Cipolla, according to Chloe Martin, a public information officer for the FBI.

Since Cipolla went missing, more than a thousand people, including those from several K9 units, have searched for him, both on the ground, in the air and water, according to numbers reported by the State Trooper dispatch. In addition to the FBI, these groups have included Alaska State Troopers, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, the Kodiak Police Department, the Bayside Volunteer Fire Department, the City of Kodiak Fire Department, Kodiak Island Search & Rescue, search and rescue teams from Anchorage and Mat-Su, the Alaska Air National Guard Rescue Coordination Center, the Coast Guard, Navy Seals and local volunteers, the dispatch reports.

Together, these groups have covered more than 9,600 acres, according to Kodiak Island Borough Assemblywoman and retired Coast Guard member Aimee Williams, who has been helping coordinate search efforts since Sunday.

Thursday - 10:40PM - Update
Here is the official update for tonight -
Community of Kodiak,
Today we continued searching using four K9 search teams, three aviation assets, and multiple ground search teams. No new clues, leads, or developments were found.
The Incident Command is requesting your cooperation tonight and tomorrow to stay out of the Termination Point area. This will allow our K9 team to work to the best of their ability through tomorrow’s operational period.
The plan for Friday, May 13th, is to allow the K9 team to execute their search throughout the morning operational period without interference from other ground teams in the area. Aviation assets will be utilized to continue searching from the air. Pre-established ground parties will be utilized in the afternoon as targeted specialized SAR teams.
Volunteers are not being requested at this time.
Again, we cannot thank you all enough for the incredible, humbling, and unprecedented community support in our ongoing efforts to find Sawyer.

This article was published in the Alaska Native News today.

Despite an extensive weeklong search in the northeast portion of Kodiak and the outlying areas for the missing autistic boy, Sawyer Cipolla, searchers have found no clues as to the child’s whereabouts.

Sawyer disappeared on Saturday, May 7th. He was last seen at approximately 11:50 am near his home off of Forest Drive in Monashka Bay. When his family could not locate him he was reported missing 30 minutes later at 12:20 pm.

Troopers immediately responded and conducted a preliminary search, and by 6:45 pm there were approximately 100 people, including members of Kodiak Police Department, AWT, AST, City of Kodiak Fire Department, Bayside Volunteer Fire Department, Kodiak Island Search and Rescue, Coast Guard sector Anchorage/Air Station Kodiak looking for Sawyer.

The search continued throughout the weekend and troopers, on Monday reported that at least 950 searchers, including more than a dozen organizations, made up of Kodiak Police Department, City of Kodiak Fire Department, Bayside Volunteer Fire Department, Kodiak Island Search and Rescue, Alaska State Troopers, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, US Coast Guard, US Navy Seals, Alaska Air National Guard Rescue Coordination Center, K9 search and rescue teams from Anchorage and Mat-Su including; MATSAR, AKSSD, and ASARD had scoured the area.

Authorities set up a staging area at the Bayside Fire Station where searchers could check in prior to assisting in the search.

K9 teams, thermal drones, Coast Guard and other aircraft, as well as boats, scoured the area day after day.

On Wednesday, as air assets and an estimated 300+ ground searchers continued the search, an additional four K9 teams were brought in from Anchorage aboard a Coast Guard C-130. Despite these added efforts, no leads have been turned up.

This was on the Search for Sawyer FB page. Our hearts break…

Community of Kodiak,

Following the end of this evening search period, the Incident Command will be suspending the community-wide search pending additional evidence and leads. Law enforcement investigation and directed search efforts will continue as new leads come in. Kodiak’s outpouring of support and volunteer assistance has allowed a truly unprecedented amount of search effort to occur over the last seven days. We appreciate the overwhelming support by residents and volunteers more than words can say.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Sawyer Cipolla is asked to contact the Alaska State Troopers in Kodiak at (907) 486-4121. We request that people contact troopers directly with information and tips.

Additionally, The Alaska State Troopers and partner agencies will be providing an update to the media on the search for Sawyer on Saturday, May 14th at 11am. The media briefing will be streamed on the Alaska State Trooper Facebook Page for residents of Kodiak and Alaskans to watch, and will be open to local media outlets.

They had a press conference. It can be seen on either the Kodiak Police Department or the Alaska State Troopers Facebook. I don’t know how to link Facebook here. The best theory they have, based on how the dogs indicated, is that he went off the cliffs and was swept away by the tides. They do not suspect abduction or any kind of foul play. There will be a service at Bayside Fire Department later today. The search was extensive and thorough. They have called off the search, unless new information comes to light. We miss him so much. His smile was contagious.

It's just so sad. I so wish the family had closure because I know they will always have questions. If he went over the cliffs and drowned I'm sure he was welcomed in Heaven with a "Come on in Brigadier". <tears>

Many prayers to family, friends and all concerned, and huge thanks to all the searchers who cared enough to help.
