Poor little guy. We can only hope that if he was abducted it was not by a pedophile but by someone who desperately wanted a child. At least in that case he is mostly likely still alive. But how horrible for his real family never to know for all these years.

Does anyone know exactly where the campsite and the convenience store were located? Do they exist today in the same way, or is the area changed and developed?

I'm not familiar with what the area looked like when Daniel went missing (I was born 20 years later) but I would say that the area has developed quite a bit. Although I've not been to the Perdido Bay area in quite some time (I live in Mobile County, where the Barter family resided) I know a lot of the area down there has been built on substantially. I'm sure it would be easy enough to find out with google maps though.

Daniel Barter has yet to be found. However, there was a theory in 2009 linking the dissapearence of Barter with the kidnapping of another child older than him.

The case has gone cold again

Who was the older child they were linking him to?

For some reason, Websleuths censored the link and the post, So i'll give you a small summary so you can google it and check it out because it's really long.

-2008: Vernon C. Seitz, 62 yr old white male is found Dead

- His Psychatrist said he had intent to confess to a homicide he was forced to participate in, following an alleged abduction, sexual assault and torture by unknown subjects.

- Seitz was kidnapped a day later from Danny.

- The police doesn't want to believe this and consider the case closed.

I do not personally know anything about this Mr. Seitz or his story, but it would seem that if he was 62 in 2008, he would have been about 13 years old at the time of Danny's disappearance.

I also do not know why the posting was removed from this thread if it was. The person who posted has been banned for some reason.

Here is a link (previously posted in 2009) to a news article about Mr. Seitz and his possible connection with this case:

I wonder how Mr. Seitz was abducted a day AFTER Danny went missing, and yet somehow was involved in Danny's abduction. It seems that that date was provided by Mr. Seitz from memory and the article mentions that there is no record of the alleged abduction of Seitz and another boy that day.

The case is still an open one, although many years cold. It has never been officially solved or closed. The FBI has opened an investigation on Danny's disappearance.

That's the article I tried to post but somehow my post got deleted. However, reading that article, it suggests that Danny and Seitz were kidnapped by a serial pedophile/killer.

The writer of this article seems convinced that Seitz was involved somehow in other cases

Were there other boys in that region that also suspiciously disappeared or were found murdered?

It seems a shame that after a glimmer of hope in 2009 the case has now gone cold again. I wonder exactly what the FBI heard being discussed in a public place that caused them to re-focus on Danny's case once again all these years later...

This year will mark the 60th anniversary of Daniel's disappearance.

Daniel Barter: missing 18 June 1959

preview

Daniel Barter, 4, was last seen playing near the banks of Perdido Bay between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. on June 18, 1959. The mobile boy had gone camping at Perdido Bay with his parents, a cousin and three of his six siblings. His other siblings were staying with relatives. The campsite was about an hour’s drive from the Barters’ home, according to The Charley Project.

Daniel is believed to have wandered away from the rest of his family while his parents were preparing some fishing equipment. He was carrying a bottle of Nehi soda. His mother, Maxine Barter, began searching for him 10 or 15 minutes after she last saw him, but didn’t find him. He has never been heard from again. The area Daniel disappeared from is swampy and infested with alligators and snakes. Authorities investigated the theory that the child had been attacked by an animal and even killed and gutted two alligators to look for remains but found no evidence of such an attack. FBI agents reported they were told by family the boy didn’t like the water and didn’t believe he would have gone into the bay voluntarily. A month before Daniel’s disappearance, his mother reported seeing a mysterious vehicle parked in front of their home. She approached the car and the driver, a man, immediately covered his face with a newspaper, then drove away. One evening not long afterward, a neighbor saw a strange man peering into a Barter bedroom where Daniel was asleep. A neighbor told Daniel’s mother and they went to the place where the man had been standing. He was gone, but there were footprints in the dirt under the window. The police made casts of the prints and took photographs, but it is unclear whether this evidence still exists. On the morning before Daniel’s disappearance, Maxine Barter drove Daniel and another son to the store, leaving the boys in the car. While she was gone, a man drove next to the Barters’ car and stared at the boys for a while without speaking to them, then drove away. Daniel’s brother told Maxine about it when she returned. These incidents have led the Barters to suspect Daniel was kidnapped by someone who had been stalking the family for some time. His case was reopened nearly 50 years after his disappearance. Many of the original investigative files have since been lost or destroyed in the intervening decades. Both of his parents have died.

Gone without a trace? Misery, mystery linger in these Alabama missing child cases

Details of Disappearance

Daniel was last seen playing near the banks of Perdido Bay, Alabama between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. on June 18, 1959. He resided in the 1700 block of Thrush Drive in Mobile, Alabama at the time, and had gone camping at Perdido Bay with his parents, a cousin and three of his six siblings. His other siblings were staying with relatives. The campsite was about an hour's drive from the Barters' home.

Daniel apparently wandered away from the rest of his family while his parents were preparing some fishing equipment. He was carrying a bottle of Nehi soda at the time. His mother, Maxine Barter, began searching for him ten or fifteen minutes after she last saw him, but was unable to locate him. He has never been heard from again.

The area Daniel disappeared from is swampy and infested with alligators and snakes. Authorities investigated the theory that the child had been attacked by an animal. They even killed and gutted two alligators to look for human remains, but found no evidence of such an attack.

An extensive search of the region, on both land and water, turned up no sign of Daniel or his remains. Even his Nehi soft drink bottle was never found. Bloodhounds were used, but didn't uncover anything useful.

Maxine stated Daniel did not like the water and she did not believe he would have gone into the bay voluntarily. The bay was very shallow at the time and a person could walk a considerable distance without getting very wet. The undergrowth bordering the campsite was thick and prickly, and as Daniel was barefoot and wearing only a pair of shorts, his loved ones don't believe he would have gone into the bushes.

After the search turned up no evidence, investigators decided it was unlikely Daniel had wandered into the woods or water near the campsite. They looked into the possibility of abduction, but they were never able to find any clues supporting this theory. The Barter family was not wealthy and they never received any communication from the supposed kidnapper(s), so a ransom motive is unlikely.

A month before Daniel's disappearance, his mother saw a mysterious vehicle parked in front of their home in Mobile. Maxine approached the car and the driver, a man, immediately covered his face with a newspaper, then drove away. One evening not long afterward, a neighbor saw a strange man peering into the Barter boys' bedroom where the boys, including Daniel, were asleep.

The neighbor told Maxine and they went to the place where the man had been standing. He was gone, but there were footprints in the dirt under the window. The police made casts of the prints and took photographs, but it is unclear whether this evidence still exists.

On the morning before Daniel's disappearance, Maxine drove him and one of his brothers to the store and went inside, leaving the boys in the car. While she gone, an unknown man drove his car up next to the Barters' car and stared at the boys for awhile without speaking to them, then drove away. Daniel's brother told Maxine about it when she returned.

These incidents have led the Barters to suspect Daniel was kidnapped by someone who had been stalking the family for some time. His case was reopened in the 21st century, nearly fifty years after his disappearance. Many of the original investigative files have been lost or destroyed in the intervening decades.

Daniel's father died in 1965 and his mother in 1995. One of Daniel's brothers, who was born after his disappearance, died of cancer in 1997. The rest of his siblings are all alive and still hope his case may be resolved.
