It appears that both boys were trying to join a gang- boy was I wrong

This should not make any difference in our thinking, but I thought posters might want to know this info. The shooter is Pakistani, and the young man who died was African American. It appears that bullying, as well as would-be gang members, is involved.

I question why school personnel didn't know about gang connections and/or bullying.

I wish they could place him in juvenile until his 21st birthday then send him to prison for the remainder of his sentence. To send a young boy into an adult prison, in my opinion, is cruel.

I am not sure what the answer is---juvee until age 21, or an attempt at rehabilitation, or ???. But I totally agree that to send a boy into an adult prison is cruel.

I'm just a mom. I'm not a psychiatrist or psychologist or legal expert. But I know that my sons at age 14 were no where near to making adult type decisions. And I know medical science backs me up on the average age of maturity of the brain.

Sometimes I wish I could just get out into the world and grab all those troubled kids and hug them and love them away from trouble, don't you?

Suspect's attorney: middle school shooting was gang related

An attorney for the man accused of shooting a north Alabama middle schooler to death is saying the incident was gang related.

[snip]

Speaking Monday, the suspect's attorney said both teens were involved in gangs.

An attorney for the "MAN" accused of shooting a middle schooler to death? Can we get more biased? This MAN was the same age as the MIDDLE SCHOOLER, wasn't he?

I'm sorry, I know in advance how this is going to sound, but REALLY, is the poor child who was murdered a "child" and a kid his own age is an "adult." It boggles the mind, friends, it boggles the mind.

I'm guessing the school employees know more than they've said. The key is they (we at other schools, anyway) are hit w/ gag orders immediately. Talk "out of school"; find a new job (and the new jobs aren't available to anyone who has shown themselves "untrustworthy" to their former district). It's just how it works.

Such a poor choice of words by the reporter. Even if the shooter is charged as an adult, he isn't a man.

Police put an end to rumors surrounding school shootin

School leaders and police decided to stop rumors by releasing new information surrounding the Discovery Middle School shooting.

The Todd Brown memorial is a sad reminder in the hallways of Discovery Middle School, but it has also become a message.

Police Chief Larry Muncey said the shooting may have been prevented if someone would have come forward.

"People always know, and I honestly believe that someone in this school had knowledge."

Police have also identified around 10 other students at Discovery claiming to be apart of the gang through self-affiliation.

Thanks for the link. The principal also stated that the shooter and T Brown were in the same gang and that, at least, 10 other students claimed to be part of this gang. And Administrator Willis's response?

"Willis said the incident does not reflect Discovery Middle School. "

Well, yes, it does. There's a gang in this school, kids are emulating the gang, and the administrators don't know?

It's that what they do? I just thought being tried as an adult gives you a harsher punishment, longer sentence.

According to the info below, it varies from state to state. Underlining by me. http://www.expertlaw.com/library/criminal/juvenile_law.html
If A Juvenile Is Convicted In Adult Court, Will He Be Sentenced As An Adult?

The answer to this question varies from state to state, and sometimes from charge to charge. Some states grant a judge the discretion to sentence a juvenile offender as a juvenile, even though he was tried as an adult. Some states mix the sentence, imposing both a juvenile and an adult sentence. In such states, the adult sentence is only imposed if the juvenile violates the terms of his juvenile sentence. Sometimes, the Court will sentence the juvenile as an adult -- a result that can be very harsh in murder cases, where the juvenile may be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Gang problem at Discovery, result of peer pressure

Even if it's a "wanna-be" gang or a real gang, being involved with one can have dangerous consequences.

Many say the so-called gang at Discovery Middle School is just small snap-shot of a problem impacting children across the nation.

Students at Discovery Middle School got a different kind of lesson, one on how to protect themselves from peer pressure.

Experts advise healthy lines of communication after gang fascination at Discovery is revealed

The aftershocks are still impacting students at Discovery Middle School nearly a week after 14-year-old Todd Brown was fatally shot, allegedly by another 14-year-old student.

Madison City Police Chief Larry Muncey told the public that the victim and the shooter, both ninth graders, were among a handful of Discovery students trying to align themselves with a national gang.

In response to the chief's announcement, Brown's family released a statement that said they didn't believe Todd had any interest or involvement in gang activity.

Even so, it's a tough time for Madison students and their parents. Many thought the small community, located just west of Huntsville, was safe from gangs and the violence associated with them.

From May 2013:

http://blog.al.com/breaking/2013/05/hammad_memon_pleads_guilty_to.html

A Madison teen who might have been among those graduating from high school last week instead pleaded guilty to murder today for the February 2010 shooting death of a fellow ninth-grader.

Hammad Memon, 17, now faces a 30-year sentence in an Alabama state prison after a plea agreement was reached with the Madison County District Attorney's Office...

Memon's attorney and a psychologist who interviewed him after the shooting said the teen had become obsessed with Brown in connection with an alleged gang affiliation.
