IANAL, but it is my understanding that this is a pretty standard move in such cases. Perhaps our verified attorney can chime in.
it certainly isn't surprising at all. If I was representing AB, I would have done this a long time ago. This ensures that the armor's name is on that jury verdict form when the jury considers awarding percentage of fault.

Would you have also named the Armourer Mentor, Seth Kenney as well in the suit as well?

I am not who you asked, but considering he was the one that supplied the bullets to set, absolutely!

I agree and his name seems to be forgotten whenever there is discussion about the armourer.

'Mentor' seems to imply he was hired to oversee or coach Hannah and yet his name is seldom mentioned in favour of blaming someone who apparently needed additional assistance in some way. Possibly because she was assigned other responsibilities or possibly because someone thought she lacked experience.

If either or both contributed to the accident, I would think that her mentor did not fulfill his obligation.

He has tried to distance himself, but he did supply the bullets to set - so it would seem very likely he is the one that also supplied the live rounds.

It would depend. I haven't kept up a lot to see what all developed in regard to Kenney's involvment. Often, Defendants will want as many names as possible on a verdict form to spread liability. But sometimes you want to focus attention on one and don't want a jury to be distracted. I would need more info. Was Kenny actually hired by Rust? Who contacted him to supply firearms and/or ammo? Who arranged him to be a "mentor" if he was. Was that a formal position or just friendly arrangement? Do we know these things?

The film’s producers also had brought in a second gun expert: Seth Kenney, who owns a licensed Lake Havasu City, Ariz., weapons and props rental company. Kenney was added to the “Rust” crew in late September as an “armorer mentor” for Gutierrez Reed, according to an internal “Rust” crew list shared with the Los Angeles Times.

According to the police report, the serial number of the Pietta was E52277. Now we need somebody who knows about these things to turn it into a date of manufacture.

Hey I know a little. I don't know much about Pietta serial numbers though. I'll see if I can find a decoder.

OK after a quick search it appears Italian firearms use a separate stamping for year of manufacture, this is not part of the serial number.

No wonder he didn’t want to turn his phone over to LE ( it took him 29 days )
He’s trashing LE !!! And saying their agenda is to write it off as an accident! What the?

'Important for you to keep in mind: The Santa Fe Sheriff's office may lack both the skill and the will to properly investigate the sabotage angle,' Baldwin messaged.
'I'm told their agenda is to write off as an accident and throw it to the civil courts. And yet, the more that is presented to me about certain anomalies on that day, the more open minded I become. I dismiss the sabotage claim initially. But not know. I hope these NM have the sense to follow it through.'

Kenney had just worked with Hannah's father on a movie where they took the actors to a shooting range, with live ammo, so that they could get a feel for recoil and how to enact fake gunfire. Hannah's father wrote a letter (which is in LE documents) stating that a certain kind of canister was used on that film, and that the same canister or one very similar showed up on Rust. So Mr Reed thinks Seth mixed up the ammo. He is of course trying to help his daughter.

But, at least there is a bit of finger-pointing that could make one sue Kenney. OTOH, none of the individuals sued have many assets - so this is likely more about bullying them into giving scant testimony or gaining depositions that implicate Hannah and Dave.

This doesn’t surprise me….

Meanwhile, AFAIK the actual victims are living their quiet lives away from the media spotlight:
