Grew up down the street from this family. Remain very close friends with his mom. This story is mind boggling. Got little to no media coverage and was the year prior to Natalee Halloway.

Still feeling the loss of her husband, the family – Yvonne, Max, daughter Dominique and Yvonne’s sister-in-law – went to Aruba for a vacation. While at the hotel, they were befriended by a man and his adopted adult son. Yvonne, who said she was hesitant at first, gave in to Max’s pleading. The ride was supposed to last only 45 minutes, but when the two didn’t show up after an hour, Yvonne knew something was wrong. A few hours later, a rescue boat found the man floating without the watercraft four miles from shore, but not Max. A three-day search ensued – with help from the Aruban Coast Guard, helicopters and a marine plane – but was eventually called off when nothing was found, according to police reports. Both Yvonne and the man were questioned by the Dutch police in Aruba, but the man was never considered a suspect, according to transcribed reports. The man told police that the two went for a ride on the personal watercraft and stopped at a sandbar. Max turned off his machine and dived into the water. He could not get the machine to start again. They made several attempts to tow the watercraft, but to no avail. There were, however, inconsistencies in the man’s statements.

This case is tragic. The FBI began an investigation in 2005, interviewing the faux “father and son” who were originally rapist and victim 20+ years earlier. The Bureau decided to drop the case to devote all their resources to investigating terrorism.

There are so many things wrong with this case but the most disappointing is the fact that the FBI stopped their investigation and never circled back. At the very least, the “father” should’ve been heavily investigated and possibly charged with kidnapping, sexual acts with a child, etc with his “son”. The son’s family may have been looking for him for years right? And then failing to follow up after he didn’t show up to the polygraph to be questioned about Max. It’s just sickening how the FBI failed so many people!

Now that the Natalee Holloway case is back in the news, my hope is that the Max DeVries case gets some much-needed attention.

BTW, the adopted son who was a suspect was charged with a brutal rape of a woman in Knoxville, TN some years after the Aruba tragedy. WTH does it take to get the attention of authorities…

I've watched both episodes. I don't know how Yvonne and Dominique have coped so well with the number of times they've been bitterly let down. Words don't even come close to how angry and enraged and distraught they must feel :(
2 men have very clearly gotten away with abuse and murder.
MOO.

This is beyond tragic. I hope the recent increased notoriety serves to bring forward more information and more witnesses so that justice may be served. My heart goes out to Max’s mom and sister.

Why would the FBI be investigating in Aruba? The island is a parliamentary democracy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The investigation would be conducted by the Aruba Police Force.

Back at home, Yvonne enlisted the help of now-retired Livonia detective Cory Williams.

“So I made a phone call to check on the backgrounds of both of these men, and within minutes I got a response: one of the statements given by the younger man – he told the police in 1981 he had been a victim of his dad for crimes against children,” said Williams in the docuseries.

The men have not been charged in the disappearance of Max DeVries, so the 7 Investigators are not naming them.

Since the older man is a known pedophile, why hasn't his name been made public?

The FBI can investigate and have jurisdiction over Americans abroad for certain crimes. This could qualify. Suspect was American, victim was American. And we have seen the staggering lack of effort and skill the Aruban authorities have in regards to these type of things.

The FBI could not walk into an investigation and assume jurisdiction unless invited by the national government.

Well first, they aren't "taking" jurisdiction from the Arubans/Dutch. They would have concurrent jurisdiction. Second, I don't know if the FBI had or had not talked to the Aruban officials about them investigating.
