ORLANDO, Fla. -- New depositions filed Wednesday in the case against Casey Anthony show the war of words at its worst between lawyers on both sides.
The depositions are of scientists from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory involved in air tests from Anthony's car.

In sworn testimony, Dr. Arpad Vass described the smell in Anthony's car as "so intense -- it can't be confined to one area."

He called the level of chloroform vapors from a carpet liner sample "massive."

Vass admitted his findings don't identify human decomposition, but rather a nonspecific, "decompositional event."

Casey's Defense Has Billed Fla. For Over $100K

ORLANDO, Fla. -- During the past year, you and the rest of the state's taxpayers have been billed more than $100,000 to defend Casey Anthony, but you won't have to pay for all of it.

Casey's defense spent more than $200,000 before asking taxpayers last year to pay the rest of Casey's legal expenses. WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer says that's twice as much as a client of limited means would spend on a murder defense.

The Florida Justice Administrative Commission (JAC), which oversees public spending on criminal court cases, has refused to pay about $1,000 billed by defense investigators. One of them, Jeremy Lyons, has been accused of trying to strong-arm prosecution witnesses into changing their stories.

"The good news is, for the most part, I'm advised the state doesn't have objections," defense attorney J. Cheney Mason told Judge Belvin Perry.

Cheney informed the judge that they have voluntarily removed Sharon Cadieux from the list

State prosecutors then had an opportunity to speak, concurring with what Cheney said about witnesses. Prosecutor Jeff Ashton suggested to Judge Perry that any matters involving the aforementioned doctors be reset for discussion after they have completed their depositions

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Judge Belvin Perry became frustrated during a Friday hearing in the Casey Anthony case, where defense attorneys tried to get more key evidence thrown out.

A former missing persons investigator took the stand first on Friday. Casey's lead attorney Jose Baez and the prosecution began questioning her about trash found in the trunk of Casey's car on July 15, 2008.

Cindy Anthony took the stand shortly after 9:10am.
"It was the worst thing I had ever smelled in my life,"
Cindy said.

A professor of forensic biology, Kenneth Furton, took the stand next.

Hearing continues Wednesday 4/6/2011 at 9:00am.

INVALID MOTION SUBMITTED by an INMATE in a MICHIGAN PRISON

Casey Anthony attorney withdraws from case?

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/os-casey-anthony-trial-attorney-withd20110404,0,4824574.story

By Anthony Colarossi, Orlando Sentinel

Online court records show a motion for withdrawal of "appointed counsel" in the Casey Anthony case, but it was not clear late Monday who that attorney might be.

The motion was filed late Monday and sources familiar with the case could not say to whom the motion referred.

One source suggested it might be an assistant public defender initially appointed to represent Casey Anthony in July 2008 before she retained Jose Baez, but another source said late Monday that the Public Defender's office pulled out of the case long ago.

The Orlando Sentinel will pull the file in the morning when the Orange County Clerk of Courts Office opens to determine the subject of the motion.

The motion is different from what was filed when her previous attorneys have left the case. They filed motions to leave on their own.

When Andrea Lyon left last June, it was filed as "Motion to Withdraw as Counsel, Andrea Lyon."

When Todd Macaluso left the case, he filed a "Motion to Withdraw, Filed By Todd Macaluso, Esquire."

This time, however, it appears Casey is asking someone to go.

WFTV's legal analyst, Bill Sheaffer, says it's possible this may be the public defender who was first appointed to represent Casey in 2008, before she hired Jose Baez.

Some media outlets in Orlando reported that Anthony requested the removal of Baez, but Local 6 News has confirmed that the filing was made by a prison inmate in Michigan who has been trying to interject himself into the case for a while.
Curtis Jackson,
an inmate at the Baraga Maximum Correctional facility, made the filing.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- More than 500 applications for media credentials have been submitted.

Chief Judge Belvin Perry must approve the recommendations.

Perry has said he wants to make sure there are seats available in the courtroom for members of the public. Only a small number of those with media credentials will be inside the courtroom at any given time.

In addition to the local media, the list includes "Dateline NBC," "Good Morning America," CNN's Anderson Cooper, HLN's Nancy Grace shows and Newsweek and People Magazines.

Casey Defense Tries To Get Evidence Tossed Out

Both sides debated all day about Casey's car that her mother, Cindy Anthony, said during a 911 call, smelled like there'd been a dead body in it.

"My opinion is that it's impossible to say, at this point, whether it's valid or not," said defense expert Barry Logan.

But during the prosecutor's cross examination, Logan admitted to never having done that type of air testing himself and that he was basing his opinion on things he had read.

"Your lab does not perform that type of analysis on air samples does it?" asked prosecutor Jeff Ashton.
"No," Logan replied.

The question for Judge Belvin Perry is whether a machine can essentially smell where a dead body has been.

While the gas chromatograph has been used to detect plenty of airborne evidence in the past, this case would be the first time evidence of human decomposition would be gleaned from air.

Prosecutors also filed a motion Friday asking to have their own mental health expert evaluate Anthony.

The move came after the defense added a pair of psychiatrists to its witness list to rebut allegations that Casey's failure to report her daughter missing for a month showed her so-called consciousness of guilt.

The judge will hear arguments on the motion next Friday as well.

Jury selection:

Perry originally said that he would pick a jury from somewhere other than Orange County, and then bring the jurors back to Orlando for the trial. Jury selection is scheduled to begin May 9. The location is unknown.

On Friday, Perry proposed that if he is unable to find a jury in another city, they will pick a jury in Orange County starting on May 17.
Perry said he would hear any objections to that proposal next Friday afternoon.

Prosecutors: Casey’s Defense Strategy Not Legal

http://www.wftv.com/news/27525942/detail.html

Updated: 11:27 pm EDT April 12, 2011

Prosecutors
in the case against Casey Anthony say her lawyers want to use a defense strategy that’s not legal.
But prosecutors say Casey would have to take the witness stand before that could happen. According to prosecutors, the new defense experts are basing their opinions only on what Casey has told them. So even if she were to take the witness stand, their opinions still might not be admissible.

Late Tuesday the prosecution filed a motion asking the judge to bar all discussion of their possible testimony during the trial unless Casey takes the stand in her own defense. The defense experts have not tested Casey or done any investigation into whatever she's told them. If Casey does testify, prosecutors then want the judge to listen to the defense experts' proposed testimonies without the jury present to determine whether their testimony is admissible.

Prosecutors are scheduled to continue deposing these new defense witnesses tomorrow.

MOTION BY STATE: (IF ANYONE FINDS A COPY WITH time & date OF RECORDING IN CLERK'S OFFICE OR TRANSMISSION from Jeff Ashton's office, PLEASE POST IT. Thanks!)

Casey's defense attorneys only have two more days to file any more motions challenging scientific evidence. Any motions will be discussed at a hearing on Friday, along with how jury selection will work.

Tattoo, Sticker In For Casey Trial, Mental Health Experts Out

Updated: 6:33 pm EDT April 15, 2011

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Casey's lawyers tried everything Friday to make sure the jury isn't picked in Orange County and the judge made some key rulings.

Friday afternoon, the defense was shut down in an attempt to have its mental health experts tell Casey's story for her about why she kept Caylee's disappearance a secret for 31 days.

Once it became clear Casey would have to undergo a state examination, the defense gave up on the whole idea.

Perry also warned the defense about stonewalling on jurors.

The defense suffered some serious setbacks during the Friday hearing when Perry shot down several defense requests to ban some photos from the trial.
The defense argued the nightclub photos were highly prejudicial, but Perry said the photos would be allowed at the trial.
Prosecutors gave more details as to the autopsy photos they may use at the trial.
Perry did exclude a single photo of Anthony smiling, but said that if her happiness is a matter of testimony at the trial, the photo could be used.

Perry also ruled that Anthony's Bella Vita tattoo and heart-shaped sticker evidence would be allowed at the trial.

Are they still going after George????

Especially this portion of the above:
In late news Monday, WKMG reported that Anthony’s lawyers had turned over some of the station’s 2008 footage of George Anthony to prosecutors. The footage shows George with duct tape that apparently matches duct tape found with his granddaughter’s remains. The defense’s action seems to suggest they will use the WKMG footage at trial to defend Casey Anthony, DeForest said, adding, “but how they plan to use it remains unclear.” George Anthony’s lawyer “adamantly denied” that his client had anything to do with the child’s death, DeForest said.

Visually, it appears similar to the extremely rare industrial grade fire-resistant duct tape that prosecutors said was wrapped around Caylee Anthony's skull.

The defense could also suggest that Caylee Anthony's kidnapper stole the duct tape from the table and planted it with the body in the woods to frame her family for the murder.
