I find it very disturbing that the perp, now in custody, confessed when he was 16 years old and took police to the whereabouts of Cheryl's body, but the police did not believe him. To think that the Grimmer family have suffered so much for all these years without finding Cheryl's remains and it could have been avoided if the boy had been believed, or at the least, that the police had seriously investigated his confession and revelations at that time. Adds to the tragedy.

Holy moly! What impact is this going to have on the case and justice for Cheryl?!

What more can a kid do than confession and show the crime scene? I'm terrified justice for Cheryl is going to get lost in the political battle of this...

Can they even try him as an adult if he confessed as a minor?

I am in utter shock that this crime went as "unsolved" for so long when a simple search could have revealed the truth. And the fact it's taken until now for us to hear it. Speechless

I can't imagine what this family has gone through and the horror to learn they could have been grieving all these years instead of looking for Cheryl and tormented by the possibility she could be alive leading a miserable life at the hands of an evil person or persons.

I noticed this in the news today. Conviction without a body on the basis of a confession to someone else for a murder that occured 43 years ago.

Yes a long walk, 49 mins according to google maps. Car? Moved the body later?

Alfred James Jessop (15 yrs old) strangled an 8 yr old Vicki Barton in the Blue Mtns (Lawson) on 1 August, 1970. Jessop used a bike with a trailer towed behind to carry Vicki's body 15 km to Springwood where he discarded the body, her remains were found 18 months after she disappeared.

I'm bringing this up because it reveals the ingenuity of this 'dangerous psychopath and sexual deviant' (Judge's description), with regards to disposal of a body without use of a car. The Blue Mountains is quite hilly terrain and Jessop managed to ride his bike and trailer (with a body) without notice.

So 4 kms of fairly flat terrain might be an easier task than one might imagine and Cheryl was only 3 yrs old, much smaller and lighter. Did the accused have access to a bike?
Another theory - Was Cheryl given a ride on the bike and killed near where her remains were supposedly disposed?

This is a Canberra Times article published on 14 Jan 1970, two days after Cheryl was abducted.
I was surprised, actually quite shocked to read that the Inspector in charge of the search for Cheryl stated that children had been taken from the beach in the past.

Think of it not as protecting him, but being a system put in place to ensure that actually innocent people who are accused of crimes they didn't commit get the most fair trial that they can.

He gets the benefit of those protections, but those protections are not about him. They're about our society making sure all citizens have the same rights and that innocent people cannot just be summarily thrown in prison at government's whim.

the development of our legal system has a complex history but it's all about making sure power isn't all about the people at the top.

Inconsistencies in original case were related to a cattle guard and a tubular steel gate.

"He allegedly described a a tubular steel gate on the fence, a cattle ramp, a track and a small creek."

"Police interviewed the property owner at the time and he said there was no cattle guard in place on the day of the alleged murder – one of the inconsistencies that led to the accused man being ruled out as a subject, Ms Beljic told the court."

“An inquiry with the owner of the property revealed that he said that the cattle guard wasn’t in place on the 20 January 1970, and indeed that at the time there was no tubular fence. That seemed to form part of their reasons not to pursue any charges against the accused.”

The property owner’s son has been interviewed as part of the recently re-opened investigation and had told police that “the cattle guard was certainly in place [and] that he recalls the tubular gate and he recalls that there was a track leading into the property … across a small creek and that corroborates what the accused said”.
