People do revisit places they've been hurt to try and give grounding and context for their experiences.

It's not something everyone wants or needs, but some do.

I understand that, but wouldn't her time be better spent with her surviving kids who must be going through hell right now? I suppose everybody reacts differently to trauma and I'm not in any way having a go at this poor woman. Just trying to understand her need for revisiting the house, while her kids are still coming to terms with the horror.

She would have been in a completely different hospital to her children. So on her release, she would have had to travel regardless.

She may have returned to the home to see if there was anything to salvage - the childrens' comfort toys or blankets. But it's entirely possible she also wanted to thank her neighbours who helped save the lives of her and the children.

Ohhhhh how I thought the exact same thing. They could have shown her videos of the well wishes...
But going back just looks like more visual trauma.

She should mourn in any way that feels right.
On a different case here a mother was quoted as saying she felt comforted by being at the last place her child had been...

Thank you for your compassion and for giving this poor mother the benefit of the doubt instead of looking for reasons to criticize her.

Just because returning to the scene is not something I might feel up to doing, that doesn’t make her desire to be there wrong and it doesn’t mean that the time she spends there means she is neglecting her children. She is a victim. Thank you again for your kind heart.

I heard on the radio this morning that the Prime Minister has been considering awarding a bravery medal to the neighbour who rescued the children from the house fire.

I have been looking for a media reference, but I am not able to find one. I heard it on Triple J news, so I imagine ABC might print something about it at some point in time.

The New South Wales premier, Chris Minns, is open to awarding bravery medals to neighbours who tried to save children from a burning home in Sydney’s west over the weekend.

Speaking outside the state parliament today, he said:

It’s not a lot of relief when you see such a horrifying alleged crime but there is, even in these terrible, terrible events, an opportunity to see regular people doing extraordinary things.
It’s a reminder that, for every terrible act out there, there are wonderful people in our community that will put themselves second and a complete stranger first if they’re in trouble.

The article linked above said they took her back to see the large memorial the neighborhood had created for them. It said the police blocked off their street and escorted her and her parents to the site of the flowers, cards, stuffed animals, etc.

I think they wanted her to see how much support and love her entire family is receiving. JMO

This is an upsetting and devastating case.

Maybe the mum wanted to go by the home to mourn her children who did not survive. And that gesture may eventually be hugely important to her surviving children, knowing their mum braves hard things to be there for her children. Imo.

Sending much love and healing for the mom, the children, the neighbors, and the first responders. Such a large ripple of people impacted forevermore by the selfish, horrible father.
