Mr Ngwira, a tourism worker from Mission Beach, was formally charged with murder when he appeared in Cairns Magistrates’ Court about 2.15pm.

The case has been adjourned until June 18.

Friends and family attending the Queensland funeral of Jo La Spina have spoken of the young woman's big, warm smile that made people feel loved.

About 400 people packed into a chapel at Innisfail, south of Cairns, to farewell the 26-year-old tour group photographer, who police believe was murdered in April.

"Something that everyone mentioned during the funeral was her ability to make everyone smile," family friend and Cassowary Coast deputy mayor Bryce MacDonald said after Thursday's service

Speaking outside court, Mr Richardson said there would be lengthy delays due to ongoing forensic testing.

Ngwira will not be required to appear in court for

his next appearance on June 18.

South African man Musa Brandon Ngwira was handed a life sentence over the 26-year-old’s death following a trial in the Cairns Supreme Court last month...

During the trial the court heard there were 52 injuries to Ms La Spina’s body and that they were consistent with a struggle and strangulation.

Ngwira’s DNA was found on her body, her clothing and a pillowcase.
