I'm curious as to why that blunder was made. If she left to clear her head after an argument, wouldn't logic tell BR, leave the phone at home, not to have it (if he did have it) on and traveling miles away from home? Especially with his switched off, which I still find odd considering he had a missing spouse.
Just an idea, maybe he intended to make it 'look' like her car and phone were travelling together, like maybe she came back after her walk, grabbed her phone and her car and made to look like she left. But when he realised that is a poor story and that there were too many flaws (CCTV etc) the story changed to the faulty gage...
And there comes the missing minutes etc...
