i guess carol remained silent during these radio calls,
i find it a bit odd russells wife couldnt talk to him, just listen into a group chat,
but maybe its not worth getting a licence to operate the radio if theyre not close?
just feels a bit lonely or sad, his wife there listening to her husband, maybe even knowing he was with carol?

To obtain a license you must be educated in the protocols and pass an exam.

Maybe if it isn't a hobby of hers, she didn't want to be bothered or pay the relevant fees? ($90 per level you wish to attain.)

I’m learning as I go here....

I couldn’t understand why Russell’s vehicle didn’t have an aerial attached, now looking at this photo it appears they have portable radios and antenna.

My friend who I travelled with last summer had a little handheld ham radio - the size of a fat mobile phone. He could use it almost everywhere we went ... used it a lot while I was driving, to chat with locals in the areas we passed through and by. I learned a lot of their required lingo, just listening. Reception wasn't so good in the Flinders Ranges though.

These guys look like pros, with their portable antenna.

And as Rob Ashlin said, he thinks two perpetrators were involved. I wonder if he is thinking of two specific people. Two people would definitely have been able to control the situation, as well as cart Russell and Carol further away.

I have an inkling that Rob has been trying to say something ..... something he cannot elaborate on due to the police investigation.

I think that of all the people that Russell may have confided in, it was Rob who heard what Russell had to say. Friends for 15 years.
And it has been Rob who has spoken with the media in a bit more detail. It is Rob who is afraid his friend (and Carol) has been killed. And now it is also the police.

I agree. The fact that he appeared so certain that they were murdered leads me to believe he knows a lot more than he is either able, or willing to say. Do people normally jump to that conclusion if someone is missing in the bush? Hell no.

I'm not sure that I believe in Mr. Ashlin's "gut feeling", or smelling of rats, or pronouncements of murder. And even if he was telling the truth as he saw it, I still don't think that his thoughts and feelings are any indication of what really happened.

Our WS community often rely on their gut or hinky which often turns out to be on the money with no rhyme or reason.

Yes, lonely and very sad bear but I betcha she knew how to use it.

I used to use that kind to keep in touch with a friend. Had a range of 2km so was good for around town and to each others houses.

With all those ‘like-minded mates’ I wonder how many have camped there and looked around for them.

AND knew everyone’s channels AND how to listen in when she needed. I wonder what she heard.

Actually, the more I hear about this Russell character the less I’m liking him and others might have felt the same as me but with motivated reason.
What did the wife say? ‘Silly old bugger’. Mmmmm that’s putting it mildly. IMO.

The word ‘KNOWS’ is when you KNOW something because it’s been told to you by someone with knowledge or you’ve seen it first hand yourself.
IMO he’s guessing on a strong hunch.

Can someone explain: "The friend said it was unlike Mr Hill to leave his camp unattended and believed the suspicious fire was set as a 'decoy' for an attack."

How would that go, exactly? I'm not trying to be funny, I'm genuinely puzzled.
