After my last post where I was confident a murderer had planned to kill Carol and Russell before they left on their camping trip, now, just a few hours later, I reconsider a possible involvement of The Button-Man in the couple's disappearance.

This switch in my focus only shows how I can have absolutely no idea what befell them, but I'm fascinated by reviewing the article about Button-Man, link below, and particularly intrigued by the reported bizarre shot found on the wildlife photographer's camera.

"...They say no one knows he is near until he decides to make himself known. A wildlife photographer spent days taking shots in the area near the Button-Man’s camp. When he returned home and downloaded his photos to his computer there was one unexplained shot of the photographer asleep inside his tent. No one knows who took the shot..."

Reports about Button-Man tell of an extraordinary character – an expert bushman and stalker, a fierce protector of his remote habitat, and adept at crafting and hunting with "Indigenous-style spears."

I imagine he wouldn't well tolerate any stray drone potentially recording his activities.

No doubt LE located and questioned him, and I wonder whether they learned of any encounter between him and Russell +/or Carol, or Russell's drone.

Do you remember that Russell allegedly had an encounter with Button-Man in 2019?

From Four people have gone missing within a 60km radius in the past year. Their fate remains a mystery
"Russell’s friend of almost 30 years, Robbie Ashlin, says it was on the King Billy Track about a year earlier that Russell and another mate had an encounter with a bushman who has been dubbed the Button Man...
Robbie says Russell encountered a man who was “agitated” and “let them know he didn’t want them to be camping there”.
Do you know anything about that encounter btw Russell & button man? I've tried googling & not coming up with anything about it

I wonder if that’s a red herring.

The man who was the last person to speak with Mr Hill, his radio friend Robbie Ashlin, said there was "no way" the 74-year-old would leave his kitted-out white Toyota Landcruiser behind.

"Russell always looked after his equipment," Mr Ashlin said.
"The last thing he said to me was his call sign, VK3-VZP… Wonnangatta Station and that's how he signed off, and that's the last time I spoke to Russell [Hill] and that was on the Friday night.

"Wasn't too alarming to miss one night, but then he missed Sunday night and Monday night," Mr Ashlin added.
'Oddball' bushman known as 'Button Man' among those questioned after sightings of missing Victorian campers

On May 25, 7 News reported:

Scott McDonald, an avid camper himself, claims he saw the pair camping at Pikes Flat, about a month before they went missing.

The 74- and 73-year-old went missing from the Wonnangatta area on March 20.

McDonald said the two friends introduced themselves to him after he set up camp next to them, adding he chatted to Hill, but not so much to Clay.

“Russell had some wires strung up in the tree and we were asking him what it was but he was using the ham radio,” he said.

I thought I read somewhere the police said that Buttons wasn’t under suspicion? I guess they could just be saying that. There’s been stories for generations of hill folk up there, living in remote areas with very little interaction with the outside world. How true that really is, who knows, but there are a few known ones. I agree with what someone said earlier - half the people up there are just ordinary everyday folk like you and me, the other half are either hiding something, or hiding *from* something.

My hubby thinks it’s someone already known to RH, maybe someone who was interested in his wife and wanted him out of the picture, but I’m more inclined to think it was someone random that he rubbed the wrong way. Hopefully the families can get some closure soon enough.

I hope so, it would be very traumatic everyday
Did you hear duelling banjos?
Yes everywhere.

I read Russell went up 4 times in the 1 month ? Long drive! but might like that or maybe happy getting away from own hometown
Maybe you could provide a link for that? I read only about one previous visit the week earlier. I think that could have been scouting out a good site for his later visit with Carol. I don't recall how long he was said to have stayed.

Yes, @trixie_au, you're correct. Police have reportedly "cleared" Button Man, as stated below by The Guardian:

"There’s a report that police are closing in on suspects using information about a 4WD and phone records. There is even speculation about a shadowy figure called The Button Man, a recluse apparently living in the area. Police have spoken to the guy and cleared him, but apparently learned things. Things yet to be known."

I don't know how the reporter can be certain Russell Hill was flying his drone near Button-Man's campsite the week before he and Carol disappeared, but according to The Age, that's what he was doing...

"What has not been revealed is that Hill was in the area a week before, flying his drone near the Button-Man’s campsite."

When I lived in Australia, some fifty years ago, The Age was considered our most credible national news source. I don't know if it's now fallen to accompany the worst rag of that period, calling itself "The Truth".
