Steve (left) has spent more than 30 years trying to find out the truth about his brother Scott's death
A man has finally confessed to the murder of Cambridge University graduate Scott Johnson after more than 30 years.

The 27-year-old's naked body was found at the bottom of North Head cliffs, a well known gay cruising ground in Sydney, Australia, back in 1988.

At the time, his death was ruled as suicide - something his family never believed.

Scott White was arrested and charged in 2020, and this week unexpectedly pleaded guilty at a pre-trial hearing.

His lawyers attempted to have the admission withdrawn, arguing that White, 50, was not mentally fit.

But on Thursday, a Supreme Court judge rejected that motion, writing the plea was entered "in a loud clear voice, and in an emphatic and determined manner".

"The gay community were second class citizens. They weren't well protected," Steve said.

"The gangs would attack these cruising areas because they knew the police wouldn't come after them. They also knew that the gay community were afraid of the police, so they wouldn't come and report the crimes."

Steve described Scott, who was a maths PhD student, as "one of the most gifted of his generation".

He added his brother was a "proud" gay man, as well as his best friend''

I am glad the Supreme Court Judge did not throw out his confession. It is horrifying that it is believed up to 80 men were murdered and that these gangs were able to carry out their attacks and murders knowing the police wouldn’t come after them. I can’t imagine what it must have been like for the gay community to live in fear of being attacked and killed by these gangs and know the police would not protect them due to the discrimination they faced because of their sexual orientation.

It is distressing to think that gay people were treated like their lives did not have the same value or they had no value at all compared to heterosexual sexual people because of their sexuality. I can’t imagine how this must have felt and the gay community still continue to experience homophobia today.

It should not have mattered what sexuality any of the victims were. These gangs should not have been able to carry out their attacks and murders and the police should have protected everyone in the community from harm regardless of their sexual orientation. It is a horrendous tragedy that for many of the gay men who were murdered and their loved ones nobody has been arrested and prosecuted for taking their lives and that the gang members involved have got away with murder.

I very much hope that the gay community who live in the area now do not continue to live in fear of being the victims of homophobic attacks and that the police have a zero tolerance approach to any hate crimes due to sexual orientation.

May Scott Johnson Rest In Peace.

NSW Premier launches biggest inquiry into Sydney's gay hate deaths

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has announced the most extensive inquiry into dozens of Sydney gay hate deaths that have gone unsolved in some cases for more than half a century.

The special commission of inquiry will be led by Supreme Court judge John Sackar and will investigate 88 unsolved murders committed against LGBTQI people from 1970 to 2010

It is in the "interests of justice" for a Sydney man who unexpectedly pleaded guilty to murdering American mathematician Scott Johnson to instead be tried by a court, his lawyers have argued during an appeal.

Scott Phillip White was handed a 12-year jail sentence in May, more than three decades after Mr Johnson's body was found at the base of cliffs at North Head in 1988.

The 52-year-old surprised his lawyers by pleading guilty during a pre-trial hearing in January, but now maintains his innocence.

White's defence team made an unsuccessful attempt to have the plea withdrawn and he is now appealing the conviction.

Barrister Tim Game SC today told the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal White did not understand that he was going to be arraigned on the morning of his plea.

“A man has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Scott Johnson just four months after he had his murder conviction over the suspected gay hate killing quashed.

Scott Phillip White, 52, on Thursday appeared in the NSW Supreme Court where he pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of the American mathematician.

However, on Thursday, before Justice Robert Beech-Jones, White pleaded not guilty to murder, but guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

He will now face sentencing proceedings in June.”

I am really glad the perpetrator has pled guilty and I hope he gets the maximum sentence possible. He caused unimaginable suffering to the victim Scott Johnson when he was killed and to his loved ones. The perpetrator doesn’t deserve any leniency for killing an innocent man, who was just 27 when he died, by throwing him off of a cliff undressed just because he was gay.

May Scott Johnson Rest In Peace.

''SYDNEY (AP) — A man who admitted killing American mathematician Scott Johnson by punching him from a cliff top at a gay meeting place in Sydney in 1988 deserves no leniency and should face the longest time in jail, the victim’s brother said Tuesday.

Scott Phillip White, 52, appeared in the New South Wales state Supreme Court for a sentencing hearing after pleading guilty to manslaughter. White had pleaded guilty to murder last year, but changed his mind and had that conviction overturned on appeal.

Johnson’s Boston-based older brother Steve Johnson said White had lost the family’s sympathy by withdrawing his confession to murder.

He and his wife Rosemary “felt some compassion because of his generous plea. Today I have no sympathy,” Steve Johnson said in a victim impact statement read out to the court.

Any gratitude the family felt was undone after White’s conviction and jail sentence were overturned on appeal, he told reporters after the hearing.

“So I am hoping the judge will give him the stiffest sentence he possibly can,” Steve Johnson said.

Manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 25 years.

White’s decision to flee the scene without calling the police had prolonged the family’s grief and loss for decades, Johnson said.''

An Australian man who admitted to killing a gay American by punching him off a cliff top in Sydney in 1988 was sentenced today to nine years in prison.

Scott Phillip White, 52, had pleaded guilty in the New South Wales state Supreme Court to Los Angeles-born Scott Johnson’s manslaughter.
