Superintendent Borland went onto say that the man was a person of interest.

"The man was a person of interest and as a result of ongoing investigations he has been charged… But there is a long way to go."

Vicki Blackburn tried to hold back tears as she thanked the police and Mackay public.

"I don't think I could explain the range of emotions," she said.

"Thank you, I can't express in words just how grateful I am for what everybody involved (has done) both in the police force and in the community."

He is a local boxer?! What the hell and why? If he is charged with robbery I wonder if that was the motive? If she was stabbed to death because this <modsnip> wanted her purse...there are not even words to express my disgust. Her poor family...all I can hope is that he gets a long sentence.

<modsnip>

Also they said something about being ex boyfriend on the news tonight.

<modsnip>. I know that the family seemed to be aware of who it was fairly early on but were unable to say anything due to the continuing investigation.

A reminder about our rules regarding social media. Please especially note the line I've bolded.

Social Networks

Also, social networking pages may only be linked if they are directly related to a case, i.e. the victim or suspect. We don't want to post to someone's mother, brother, employer, milkman, or postal carrier just because they know the main player. We also NEVER link to minor's pages (unless they are the victim). And be sure that the page actually belongs to the person being discussed. Do not link to someone if you are not 100% sure it is the correct person. And if a social networking is set to private and you get in the back way, you may not post what you find. Private means private!

And he owned the white ute that was identified earlier on ...

In February this year, detectives revealed a vehicle had become central to the case.

They released CCTV images of a white ute from the night of the attack and said the occupant or occupants may be able to assist with the investigation.

On Thursday, police confirmed the arrested man was the owner of the ute.

You can bet he has been sweating it out for a while ...

He was also known to Ms Blackburn, but Detective Inspector Karyn Murphy wouldn't explain the exact nature of their relationship.

"He certainly came to light early in the investigation," she told reporters in Brisbane.

The 32-year-old man also appeared before coercive hearings at the Crime and Corruption Commission in the past six months, she said.

THE Mackay community is this afternoon singing the praises of the police and sending thoughts to Shandee Blackburn's family.

A 32-year-old Mackay man was today arrested and charged with the murder of the 23-year-old.

Detective Inspector Karyn Murphy said the arrest was due to plenty of hard work.

"The arrest is the culmination of a protracted investigation conducted by police from the Mackay Criminal Investigation Branch and the State Crime Command's Homicide Investigation Unit and I would like to thank them for their commitment to this investigation," she said.

Police really did look high and low for evidence in this murder (from sleep's link above) .. lots of good photos there.

Soooo good to see 'ARREST' in the thread title now ... finally ... after so long.

"Today the father-of-two and former champion amateur boxer was arrested at a Brisbane prison."

So, was he already in prison when he was arrested? Or was he visiting the prison? Did he work there? What was he doing at a Brisbane prison?

.

It's possible he was already there:

He was investigated by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

So good to see yet another killer brought to justice. Good on ya, Mackay police! And I am so glad there's a bit of relief for Shandee's family as well.

Them boxers eh. So many with anger and control issues.. I have been waiting for years for there to be some kind of sport-wide action taken on the issues of domestic and other violence. Of course. I am not bashing all boxers -- along with the angry guys, there's also quite a lot of nice fellers and some great role models who can leave their fists in the ring.. but yeah, more than a few ticking time bombs as well. Time for the promoters to step up and get a program going, I say.

Footage of a female person in a small black vehicle, this person was at (United) service station at about midnight on that night.

I know it probably doesn't matter now but I wonder why the girl got out of the passenger side and then into the driver's side of the car? I wonder if she did see anything? Will have to wait until the trial...

They have star chambered somebody, CCC is not like an arrest or trial, there is no right to silence. He may have been caught up in VLAD laws, or somebody has blown the whistle. It is 5 years for refusing to answer the star chamber. http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/qld/consol_act/caca2001219/s190.html

The CCC uses its coercive hearings power, not only in its own investigations, but also when police request assistance with serious crime investigations that cannot be advanced using traditional policing powers.

I did not know that...
