After weeks of searching and investigating doesn't LE usually announce that they found "no indication a crime occurred" if they don't think foul play is involved? It worries me that they haven't said anything like that.

Are there going to be any locals searching this weekend? Are there other missing people in Byron Bay in recent years?

Canadian girl, Natalie Perkins, went missing there a couple of years ago (2106). They found her deceased. Police 'thought' it wasn't a suspicious death but there were none of the usual Beyond Blue helpline numbers after the articles.

Last year (2018), Mark Goyen went missing, found deceased, not sure what the coroner's inquiry determined - if the inquiry has been held yet. Mark went for a walk on Childe St - where Theo's hostel is - and disappeared.

Emma Selby went missing in Byron Bay (2014). Considered a runaway. Never found, that I know of.

These are just a few that come to mind quickly.

Yes. I think they usually say something like 'police believe there are no suspicious circumstances', if they think the person may have taken their own life.

The physical search for missing Belgian backpacker Theo Hayez who disappeared more than three weeks ago in Byron Bay has been suspended but police inquiries are continuing.

It comes as his father thanked the local community for their support.

Theo, 18, was last seen leaving the holiday town's Cheeky Monkey's bar about 11pm on May 31.

Thank you for the replies to my questions @SouthAussie

I’m a well educated 30 year old married female, not a disgruntled male who was kicked out of a pub once and in denial about my behaviour. This is my experience in Melbourne - I’m not saying it happened in Theo’s case but it does happen. I’ve seen first hand groups of males not accepted inside unless females are with them as it throws off the gender balance inside. I’ve worked in pubs/clubs when younger so don’t put my opinion down thank you.

Yeah it happens. To be chucked out indicates a safety risk, to self or others. That bar’s clientele are youngun’s, particularly backpackers, and its reputation is dependent on everyone feeling it’s a safe and fun place to go, most especially females. Too many guys present can be intimidating so yeah they want a gender balance, and it’s not uncommon for females in the entry queue to get allowed in first as it’s a draw card. We saw Theo enter and it didn’t look like a queue to get in so the balance was probably ok or the crowd not huge. Theo’s mate said they went together and then mixed with other people. Something went down and he got told to leave, alone, and without support. That we know.

The headline on that article implies it’s all over. The article however states the search is just suspended and will be reassessed on Monday.

Maybe they are now of the opinion the body won’t be found locally, and the phone is proving too difficult, yet they have enough info from the phone to invest their time and energy elsewhere.

Where were they found do you know?

Does anyone have info on the sneakers found near the collapsed sand dune? There's some new info. Not sure if they are TH's sneakers. Couldn't find anything in the news media so far.
It's actually not new info, it seems to be ambiguous. Apparently, some sneakers were found weeks ago by a citizen. No mention of it in papers.
