I agree, I am doubtful it is his.
I would also think that if new evidence was found a police search of the area would be resumed. I think we all want answers, are desperate for clues
New breakthrough in search for 18-year-old backpacker

New breakthrough in search for 18-year-old backpacker

Yahoo News Australia18 July 2019

IMO i dont feel it is his.
Delay in the media publishing, no mention on the LFTH facebook page (there is a section under FAQ there that states updates, so nothing there).

There is als no mention on his cousins FB, I would say coincidence or some cruel person has thrown it in there to find and it is not his.
I don't feel this either, a hat was found but unlikely to be his as if it was police would have already renewed their search with this new evidence and DNA testing would have been done straight away. It does not take 10 days to do this. And someone did post the link about this hat on the FB page which was promptly deleted I gather because the hat was not his.

Interesting. Does look like it is his cap. Hard to imagine there would be another Puma hat exact same as his in the area. His airport photo means he purchased it before he arrived in Australia. So police do know more, probably have a DNA match, but don’t disclose all they know

I'm a little bit out of the loop as I haven't read much on this case recently, but this is new to me:

The path he took from Cheeky Monkeys to the Cape.
This image is from NoCookies | The Australian

The caption under the image reads: Theo Hayez's final phone records, obtained by News Corp, show the route he took from Cheeky Monkey's about 11pm until just after 1am the next morning when the last recorded signal came from a tower near Cape Byron lighthouse.

From the article:

"A hat that could belong to missing Belgian backpacker Theo Hayez is being forensically examined after it was found in Byron Bay bushland.

The hat was handed to police after it was found by a member of the public in the same area where the last “ping” from Theo’s phone was recorded on June 1 around the Cape Byron Lighthouse"

So it’s not a black hat as reported. Where’s the investigative journalism these days? Doesn’t take much effort to Google a few photos of Theo that are floating around. Can’t rely on Australian media to help much. I bet they don’t bother following this forum or update the article before it duplicates to other news outlets

That link doesn't work for me. The 1am time is out to begin with and I'd like to know how they got phone records.

I don't think the failure of it being publicised by the family or the Police rules it out. I'm waiting for something official that is definitive to be said. His father has come out and acknowledged that verification takes time.

Someone messaged me about this cap before it hit the media. He had joined LFTH Group and jumped in and was trying to assert himself or get attention by claiming the FAQ was wrong and asking who did the FAQ. He messaged me about the FAQ not including the cap info. That wasn't made public in the Group AFAIK (I blocked him afterwards). I dismissed him knowing what's released is up to the family and the Police. So, I'd say this has been a leak by someone who hasn't thought with their brain.

Unless News Corp knows something that police has not disclosed. I too want to know how they obtained his phone records too. I sure would like those privacy acts only allow businesses to share such info with LE, and no one else, ceetainly not News Corp.

They've needed to respond.
"You may have noticed many new reports about Theo’s disappearance in the media today. We can confirm that a hat matching the description of Theo’s was found in bushland by volunteers 12 days ago and is currently undergoing DNA testing. Please understand that we cannot give any further information in relation to this breakthrough."
From the LFTH Page (not the Group, that will be shut down).
I hope that the Page is now official. It was originally set up by a random.

The only articles I can find about this route from phone records from the Police are pay walled. It might take a while for open media to pick up on it.
The Australian article is behind a pay wall. The article is pretty much just the paragraph that I've posted above plus the images. From the article it seems that News Corp has managed to obtain the route that he took. It may have been leaked to them. Article states that this is the route he took between 11pm and 1am.

I got that pretty much from your previous posts. But it is good that you confirm this.

Will see if other media pick this up. Won't be surprised some are busy fact-checking, like we are now.

Right now only the found cap has been reported by every one.

In case you (actually I) are thinking that Puma cap is a common basic offering by Puma... Even a search for black Puma caps return many styles:

Capture+_2019-07-19-16-50-42.png

So there IS a chance that it was Theo's. Just like it was too much coincidence for two backpackers to disappear 4 months ago, 400 km away:rolleyes:

That's very distinct showing a lot of doubling back. It isn't like the theorised map I put up showing the direct route to Tallow Beach from CM.
There has only been a mention of 'ping' as in singular. I did, however, see one mention by a family member of 'Google' in relation to the ping. I thought at the time it might have been a slip up.
Since this is now out there I hope it can be confirmed or denied. We wait.
Only on theorising this is a possibility:
1. The Messenger message was about an hour after leaving CM. About 25 mins to Tallow Beach and about the same from there up the beach to Cosy Corner. It could fit time wise. He was said to be 'ok' when he sent that message.
2. The last ping was up to 2 pm the next day. Map has that location at Cosy Corner. Big time difference.
3. Utter and pure speculation: that climb up from Cosy Corner to The Lighthouse has brought a lot of people unstuck. There are a lot of rescues there. There was a recent one that resulted in new signs being put up. It's possible he might have tried it. The last official Police search while the Belgian Police were here was down the cliff faces.

This map now needs to be confirmed or denied.
