This is the latest update. The article has information that Axel's Uncle shared on FB a while back but I couldn't link it because it wasn't verified. What strikes me as really odd is his friend waited 17 hours to report him missing. Missing hiker search quiets - Sedona Red Rock News
Yeah - like @moonriverfarm said above- I think since he didn’t have keys or a phone that was the reason for the 17 hour delay. The article says he last saw him at 1pm, returned to the car at 11pm and then slept there, catching a ride out of the parking area the next morning. So he probably reported him missing as soon as he got to a phone; 17 hours from 1pm the day prior would be 6am I believe.

Has it been reported that anyone other than his friend saw him on the hiking trail? I would think there would have been someone else out there, at least in the parking area. Might help with a timeline.

Why would he go off their trail, keep walking alone for ?? minutes? It seems to me that you must know - I hope - that you keep getting away from your companion? You're already pretty far if you're not hearing him calling for you. Something happens? No response from my friend? I would go I fast as I can to get any help that I can find. Any help, now! I would give my shirt and everything else.

You're hiking with a friend but you are separated for maybe 30 minutes. Each of us goes his own way while hiking together and it's fine. But you're not familiar with the mountain. Is it normal to do that while hiking with someone else?
Only trying to find out if hikers are OK with separating while on a hike with a companion.
IMO

Sadly, any combination of separating from one's hiking buddy, going off trail, challenging terrain and high temperatures often leads to a very bad result. Combining all four factors, IMO, no other explanation is required. Hoping Axel's family and friends find peace.
Apparently they found clothing and his backpack a few days into the search.
