How sad for his family.

I wonder if his rental car ever turned up anywhere, but it sounds like it didn't.

The long planned drive through a rural landscape + car missing + family/career/assets left behind point toward a car accident, not a voluntary disappearance, IMO.

The rental car to our knowledge has never been found. However the case, has been dormant for a very long time. Also, the case files were lost due to various reasons. A new missing persons case has been opened. So if the car has been found it may not have been identified as being a car associated with a missing person.

I know this sounds like a dumb question, it being AZ. Are there any bodies of water near where he went missing?

When I was researching, I looked around the key locations mentioned in the newspaper articles (Phoenix, Globe and Pinetop). The biggest body of water I found was Rainbow Lake, which is not too far outside of Pinetop-Lakeside.

Details of Disappearance

List was last seen in Globe, Arizona on October 29, 1986. He traveled from his home in Ohio to attend a medical conference on arthritis in Scottsdale, Arizona, then went on a road trip to visit a friend in Show Low, Arizona.

He never arrived there. The last indication of his whereabouts was when he stopped at the now-defunct Copper Hills Inn in Globe. He checked out at 5:35 a.m. on October 29. That day he also called his family and asked them to renew his malpractice insurance policy. On October 30 at 7:00 a.m., he called to say he would be home on November 1 or 2, but didn't say where he was at the time of the call. He has never been heard from again and his renal car has not been found.

The circumstances of List's disappearance are unclear. He may have left some personal belongings behind in a hotel in Scottsdale. At the time of his disappearance, he was a general practitioner, medical director of several nursing homes, and the head of the medical division of the General Motors plant in Warren, Ohio.

He's described as a devoted family man and a reliable employee and it's uncharacteristic of him to leave without warning. His case remains unsolved.

I don't know anything about Arizona, except I think it's very hot and there's desert?? Are there also some bodies of water (any at all), along the route he would have traveled?

Does anyone have any theories on this case? TIA

A few small bodies of water, a river + a large creek, though I don't know what it looked like 40 years ago. And of course, who knows if he actually went to Show Low.

The Salt River Canyon area looks a bit dicey. The first article in post 1 says he was familiar with the area as he had lived there for about 10 years, but I wonder what the weather was like? Per the second article in post 1, his wife said that authorities told her the area where he was last seen could conceal an automobile accident indefinitely. They compared the Salt River Canyon to the Grand Canyon.

Look at these switchbacks:

I would have to go with accident at this point. I'm curious why he decided to stay another night in Globe, though. I mean, as of the 2020 census, the population was 7,249. Couldn't have been much going on there in 1986 except mining?

Also curious about what he left behind in the hotel in Scottsdale. Sounds like police still don't know. MOO

WOW!! I had no idea that there were any topographical features there like the Salt River Canyon. They compared it to the Grand Canyon! I'm assuming that means that there are vast areas that just can't be searched, right? Very sad for him and his family.
