I hope they have more eyes up in the sky today! 5he fact that it is not densely forested gives me hope that they could see something from above.

Me too. I think a kid that age could easily survive a night out. And is old enough to know to try to signal or call out to searchers. And since there's so much deer in the area, predators should not be a major concern. I think he wandered and got lost.

Do we know if they're searching today? And how?

4 HOURS?!
I am not one to criticize how long it takes to call police...
However, the 2 times I had a child "missing" I was calling by 30 minutes.
One time was in a "forest" area... and since I had no clue where to start looking I was ready to call after 10 minutes!

With that many people available to send someone to call if cell service was bad...
I see NO reason to wait 4 hours. That is an eternity when your child is missing!
In many of these cases LE has responded and FOUND the child within 4 hours. :twocents:

They must be regretting their decision to wait 4 hours SO much right now. Especially as it meant no professional search started until the light was starting to fade.

The only positive things that 4 hours says to me is that they really thought they had *just* seen him, they weren't in an area they considered dangerous (so probably no water/steep declines/etc right near by), there was probably no one else nearby and there were no special issues that would prevent him from coming when called, etc. Trying to take these things as a silver lining from the 4 hour wait time...

With 20 people in their party I think they probably simply felt certain they could find him on their own. It's not a dense area.

I agree, but I still think that suggests that they weren't *that* worried, which is a good thing.

You're telling me there were 20 people at this campsite and not one of them decided to call for help until he'd been missing for over 4 hours? Unbelievable!

What are "long handled underwear"?

What are the temps like in that area? Would long underwear be necessary in the daytime?

Yes. That's the area I was looking at. One side (south on the screen) sparsely forested and the other side looks like dead trees and very lightly forested.

I see no evidence of any camping area though - not turn out or small road or clearing. Odd. And there are so many more beautiful places to camp close by!

I wonder if they're hunters. There are a ton of deer, just a ton in that area, from what I recall.

It's not deer hunting season, but I agree that there are so many more beautiful places to camp. Davia mentioned that it has been raining a lot recently. It kind of looks like there might be a dry creek bed and even possibly a dry lake in the satellite views. I wish we had an image during the wet season.

Excuse my rough drawing, I added a blue line just above what might be a creek bed and circled the possible dry lake. What do you think?

I agree, there are many of little creek areas and little water holes, where I'm sure have water at this time with all the rain we have had the last few weeks.

This post makes me sick to my stomach. I have a nephew about this age and the thought of him being out and alone in the wilderness like that is terrifying. If this doesn't end well, they will also probably be thinking about that four hours for the rest of their lives. Thankfully we are still in the range where he could be found alive. I am optimistic that he will be.

Thanks for that Gitana! The coordinates for that free campsite are: 36.556214, -112.145452 It looks like it is about 2 miles from the point where 67 meets FSR 241.

Could the coordinates be 10 digits?

Ugh, unfortunately: "Friday morning, air operations were suspended due to weather conditions, Arizona Department of Public Safety Sgt. John T. Bottoms said, noting that all agencies involved worked through the night in the search."

But it looks like ground operations continue, right? They'd better. Right now, there are flash flood warnings and thunderstorms in Coconino county. But it looks like it will clear up late this afternoon:

Weather's not cooperating. :( I hope they find Jerold soon.

I was sure after I posted this thread I'd come back later to a lot of found safe posts. I was so certain because I just had a feeling.

So sad that I was so wrong. :(

Where does Jerold and his mother live? where are they from?

What I;m seeing from this website is that the possible campground is really on the edge between the sparse and forested areas: http://freecampsites.net/#!(36.553186896901046, -112.10202019661665)

Going back to that website, it sounds like it might be saying that there are 30 or more remote/unimproved campsites along FSR 241. So while they give GPS coordinates for the road, it doesn't necessarily mean they are camping in that exact spot.

Free campsites all along the forest service roads of the Kaibab National Forest- not just road 241. Stop by the Forest Service visitor center at Jacob Lake to get a free paper map of the Forest Service roads.
