AZ - Joseph Beadle for feeding puppy to snake, Glendale, 2007

I could feed any little critter to a snake - I am not bothered by that - but I am socially aware enough that I would stick to today's "accepted" live food for snacks...rats, etc...even though, as I said earlier, I had two tame rats as a kid that were way gentler than some feral cats I've come up against.

I wonder if this guy would have gotten in trouble if he fed the snake a feral kitten. What about bunnies - are they protected as domesticated? Also, where did he get the puppy from?

Good questions! We have a neighbor who raises bunnies to sell for food and breeding purposes. They are so cute. Phewww, I'm not vegan but I don't eat meat unless there is no other choice or I don't want to be rude to a hostess or something. As my cousin says, I don't want to eat ANYTHING that can look me in the face.

I suspect if someone saw him feed a kitten, feral or not, he would have gotten in trouble but probably not a bunny.

On the other hand, I couldn't feed a snake anything alive or that had been alive, but I wouldn't kill a snake just for general purposes either or mistreat one.

Thank you for commenting BEOSP.

It does make sense to me I just like to debate:)

ya know we as a society have domesticated these animals (not snakes but dogs and cats etc) and we have managed to replicate an appropriate food source... Why can't that be done for snakes?

I would be sooo sad to see a bunny eaten!!
I had one that was litter box trained.

as far as a bunny i guess it would depend on the state. many states think of bunnies as livestock. its the same with pigs. people keep them as pets but the law calls them livestock. i grew up with a lady who has a pet chicken. it would ride on her horse with her. people keep some odd things as pets imo. i doubt the scorpion loves you back but some people love it. states list animals based on common use.

do you mean why cant we come up with a vegan source of food for snakes? i would guess it is in part the difference between mammals and reptiles.

Me, too. I couldn't do it.

I've wondered the same thing about replicating food sources. On the other hand, have you ever thought about where dog food ingredients come from?

It's a pretty hard cycle for humans who love animals to come to any kind of reasonable degree of comfort in all this.

Just the title of this thread made me sick to my stomach.

Zero resepct for life!

I really cannot stand the human race (as a whole) anymore.

I don't have a problem so much with it in the wild.
Its just how things work .. I don't have a problem eating steak or chicken or pork.
I do not want to know the Animal I eat .. I am very happy with going to Publix.

I am ok with it in a zoo as well mainly because I feel that its kind of cruel to have animals in zoo's at all and they should have as close to their normal environment as possible.

I can not let myself get into this discussion as I now know what threads get me going..lol. But I just wanted to say That I have saved all 4 of my RATS from becoming snake food. Where I work I ask people why they choose to have snakes and the answear I get the most is because they want to watch it eat. I think this SOB is one of those people. I do undersatnd that they need to eat to, but there are others ways which is more humane to the snake and the food of choice. I promote frozen rodents as they are put down in good way(so I am told) IMO this man wanted to see how cool it was to watch the snake eat a puppy....so sad for the puppy.

I honestly don't know what to think about this...

I have a friend that runs a rescue group in Australia for rats these rats in many cases would become snake food. Keep in mind they were not breed as food as they were pets. Plenty of people have pet mice as well. Its not like there is one cage in the pet shop for "food" rats or mice and another for "pet" ones.

So I am not sure there is a big difference here. I am not saying its right but snakes do eat smaller creatures and I don't know if a hungry snake would not eat a puppy in the wild.

I think we all have a soft spot for puppies and not so much for rats, mice and snakes..
But I know plenty of people that love reptiles and rodents as pets.
I think you and I have the same friend!! Angelrat??

I understand the snake lovers debate, but I rescued an unwanted puppy who has become almost one of the great loves of my life, hubby and children nonwithstanding, of course. I would rather he have fed the snake something bred as snake food and non-domesticated.

They are sold at reptile shows for food as well

Rats are domesticated, I swear!!

This is so disgusting--This guy should have gotten ten years at hard labor--Animal Cruelty laws need to be updated and to be much more severe than they are now--a helpless and defenseless puppy

Yes!
You Goofball!! I am the one who gave you the link to the site LOLOL
(I hope that a little goodnatured name calling is ok with the mods)

I was thinking of the two of you when I posted about pet rats :)

I agree that they should be fed deceased things..

I despise snakes to begin with.. But I tried to look at all sides while discussing this. I know the arguement is that its healthier for the snake to feed it live food ...... BUT I have also heard that often the snake will not go for its prey right away and that the rat or mouse will actually cause harm to the snake.
I think there is something intrinsically wrong with someone who would take joy in watching that.
I could understand ... the arguement that its what the snake must eat to survive... But to take joy from watching it???
NO

I would not take JOY from watching an animal be killed even though I understand at times for humane reasons it must be done.. At those times it can be done humanely. (This is not to be taken out of context with another thread we have about animals) That was a drastic situation and we can Keep that topic there:) K? :blowkiss:

I know EXACTLY what you mean!

Please, write your state officials, or e-mail them and send them the link to the story. Ask them what would happen in your state should the same thing occur. If they get enough e-mail they WILL listen. Explain to them that it is time to reform state law and what you would like to see happen.

It doesn't take long and most states' representatives and senators can be found by typing in www.thenameofyourstate.gov (type in the name of your state).

Check with local groups and see if you can get a grassroots effort going in your county. Tell them you WILL remember when the next election comes up whether or not they responded to your satisfaction. :snooty:

Off my soapbox ...

Where is Glitch Wizard? She has a snake, doesn't she? Does it eat puppies? If so, I'll never speak to her again!! :furious:

And I'm so glad this guy is at least serving some time. It's sickening.

Oh My:doh: My memory has left oh 4 days ago. Thank you again for getting us together. She is really my rock now as it comes to my babies.

Okay so I have worked with rats for a year and have only been bitten twice now. BOTH times these rats killed the snake and were brought back to me. One of these poor things was inside the snake part way. as I was told. these poor little creatures have MORE memory and smarts than dogs and cats. IMO And just so you know my house is full of Pets. We have 2 Huskies, A Maine Coon mix, and the 4 rats. I could never imagine any of my babies being snake food. I want to know why this man did this. As I stated before I honestly think it was to watch and see.

I can not stand snakes, but love ALL animals and understand they need to eat. I just think we need to find them something else to eat. MOST snakes will eat non living food, proven fact(my own personal study at work) and the few who wont will after they get hungry enough.

And I agree no other topic cant deal with that today, cant believe I am here, But you sucked me in:blowkiss:
