PD: Man who follows teen into Phoenix restroom is beaten, killed by father

A man who tried to enter a teenage girl's bathroom stall was confronted and killed by the girl's father, officials say.

According to Phoenix police, around 11:30 p.m. on August 2, 40-year-old Melvin Harris went to the QuikTrip near Dunlap and 19th avenues to pick up his teenage daughter and her friends.

A man, who would later become the victim, approached Harris' car in the parking lot and asked for money. Harris gave him some money, and the man went into the QT.

Harris was later informed that a man tried to enter the bathroom stall his daughter was using. The teen told an employee, who in turn alerted an on-duty security guard.
...

Harris has been charged with second-degree murder.

No sympathy for this piece of rubbish whatsoever - I hope it hurt a lot.

Father charged with second degree murder, he has done the country a favour. There are too many people like this in every country who commit these crimes and when caught get a slap on the wrist, and told not to do it again. My sympathy is with the father.

I hope sympathy is shown to this father during a jury trial. The monster he killed was out to harm his daughter, ruin her life.

He did a big favor to get him off the streets so someone else’s daughter didn’t face him.

Our laws do not punish these rapists enough!

USA you are not alone, the UK is equally stupid when it comes to these people, the punishments are a joke and not a funny one at that, it sickens me.

Do we know he killed the right guy?
Do we know the guy had evil intent when he entered the rest room?
Maybe he just stumbled in there, confused.

So quick to judge....the daughter was unharmed....a man is dead.

I can understand the anger. I don't believe it vigilante justice. I do feel for the father, and don't wish anything bad upon him. I do hope the mitigating circumstances are taken into consideration at his trial if some kind of plea can't be agreed upon.

Sad situation all around.

This needs to be self defense against sickos.
Don’t mess with our children!!

I understand this...I too would fight for my beautiful daughter, if I felt she was at risk.

However taking the law into your own hands & acting in ANGER......it can’t be right. Overkill. He could have restrained the guy & called the police.

But then..I don’t believe in Old Testament vengeance.....Jesus gave us 2 commandments to follow.

Wow!! How sad for both families. Don’t blame this father one bit. My ex husband would have done the same. Very interested in the creepers criminal background as I’m sure it will help the father. Or maybe it won’t. Hard to judge this father for his actions. Thinking he didn’t have to ruin his daughters life ugh this is why we have a system.. a system that fails but a system

And arguably, this father put his daughter at further risk when he pulled over to confront this perv on the street when they were driving away. Who knows what could have happened to her if the perv had a knife or gun and gotten the upper hand in the fight. The father seems to have let anger overwhelm his concern for his daughter's immediate safety.

I completely agree!

I need to know more facts about this before I can form an opinion...

Absolutely.

Absolutely overkill. Brutal.

I thought I was the only one wondering where the evidence is that the guy was out to rape this girl. If he had actually had bad intentions it's not like those stalls are built like steel. He could have easily gotten into it if he wanted to!

I was guessing if this guy had some awful criminal history we would have heard about it by now. So I went and looked him up. I see ZERO evidence this guy was a "creeper" or a "perv" or a "rapist." I see a homeless guy who was a VICTIM.

Yes, he has dozens of priors, as it to be expected of a panhandler in Phoenix. He was arrested almost weekly. Just had a pre trial hearing a week before his murder.

Look him up yourself:

Leon Leevon Armstrong - 04/24/1992

All his charges are Misdemeanors I believe but I don't have time to double check right now.

Trespassing, Theft, Shoplifting, Riding the bus without paying, disorderly conduct, fighting, the most "sex offender like" behavior I saw was "SPIT/URINE/DEFECAT/LITTER ON VEHCL/PRPTY." I'm guessing it was spit or litter though.

I was only surprised there wasn't more drug charges, I think I only saw one paraphernalia charge.

I don't see a single thing in this guy's history that helps the defendant. In fact I think his criminal history shows a clear pattern of simply trying to survive on the streets.

I don't see a single thing in his history that would cause me to fear him, or feel he deserved what he got. I'm guessing that he was probably known around the neighborhood and we may hear more about him later.

He does remind me a lot of a guy I saw at Big K in Phoenix a lot. I'll look later and see if any of the arrest addresses match up. It's been a long time though so I doubt I could ever be sure.

I think this was a jump to conclusions and a cold blooded murder. Which likely traumatized the hell out of his daughter who just watched her father brutally kill a man. That will mess her up for sure.

There was zero justification for this. Period.
