Latest I've heard is that Giffords was shot in the temple, and the bullet exited her forehead.

If this is true, it's a massive stroke of luck. Frontal lobe injuries tend to leave someone without all the normal emotional control, and less adequate decisionmaking facilities, but it's not the cognitive, or communication, or basic life support center; this is the area they talk about when they say 'not fully developed yet', meaning "immature" - generally in reference to impulse control and teenagers.

Right now, my main concern would be increased pressure (elevated ICP) in the brain case, herniation of the brain, subsequent stroke, and big concerns about infection. But now that I know the location, I am more hopeful that she may make a good recovery.

And she is still sedated/anesthetized, and I'd expect her to be that way for at least 24 hours. You don't want someone with these types of injuries to be agitated, restless, or trying to move a lot.

And I've just heard it is now 6 fatalities, including Judge Roll and the 9 year old child.

I have a brother that is a paranoid schizoid, not on meds, and is too old so we cannot get him help. I live in a different state then him. Last I went to visit I pushed so hard to get him help that I'm no longer welcomed. The only good thing and it is sad to say is he is in a wheel chair and deaf. He has shown aggression before but that was always because he was in his mind in extreme fear. He does not think anything like this guy but he does think every gov. agency is after him and they have cameras in the ceiling, mailbox, TV and every place else. Every time I hear any incident on TV in my home town I just pray it isn't him.

Such a tragedy. It is obvious to me from reading this young man's thoughts that he was FAR from in touch with reality. I agree that mental illness plays a big part in this awful day.

Thank you SD for your post regarding Kelly's "event". I am speechless. How completely irresponsible. WTH? I wonder if this played a role in inciting an obviously sick young man to act.

I'm thinking of all the people impacted today with 6 dead and 18 injured ~ think of all the family and friends. I saw one white haired man sitting at the crime scene and he was so sad, looking down. Two more staffers names in this article who are injured. KOLD are waiting for confirmation of Zimmerman's death.

Two other staffers were wounded in the shooting. The two — Pam Simon and Ron Barber — remained hospitalized tonight, said C.J. Karamargin, a Giffords spokesman. He said their prognosis is good.
