A boat capsized and sank in the Danube River in Budapest just before midnight on Wednesday, leaving at least seven people dead and as many as 19 unaccounted for, officials said.

Under heavy rainfall, rescuers managed to bring 14 people to shore, the state news agency MTI reported. Speaking to reporters early Thursday, a spokesperson for the National Ambulance Service said that seven people had died.

Including passengers and crew, there were three dozen or more people on board the boat, MTI reported.

According to the Foreign Ministry of South Korea, 33 South Korean tourists were on board the ship, on a tour of the Danube. Seven of them were rescued; seven were confirmed dead; and the rest, 19, remained missing. The ministry said it had established an emergency task force to learn more information from Hungary and to contact the victims’ families.

Employees from the South Korean Embassy in Budapest were assisting Hungarian officials in identifying those rescued and the deceased.

"Television footage showed the bank of the Danube closed off by police on the Pest side to the east, across from the World Heritage site of Buda Castle on the west side.

Police ordered all shipping to stop on the Danube in central Budapest in a statement.

The Danube's flooding and currents made rescue efforts extremely difficult, a rescue diver told the state broadcaster, adding that the waters of the Danube were only about 10 to 12 degrees Celsius."

I was just in Budapest and admired all the boats, they looked like a lot of fun. Very scary to think this could happen. I am not sure the weather has been that great. Here in Italy it happens to be the coldest May since 1957, and seriously won't stop raining. I wonder if they have received extreme rain. I feel for these families, and group that was just out enjoying the sights. Budapest is one of my favorite places I've been to.

There are a lot of boats on the water. They are long and fit a good amount of people.

At least two bodies have been recovered from the wreck of a tourist boat that sank on the Danube in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, last month.

Divers entered the boat as a floating crane slowly raised it to the surface.

The Mermaid was carrying South Korean tourists when it was in collision with a cruise ship and capsized, leaving 20 people dead and eight others missing.

Recovery efforts by Hungarian and South Korean teams have been hampered by high water levels in the Danube.

Footage from the scene on Tuesday morning showed the cabin and upper deck of the boat emerge from the water and divers then carry out a search for victims still trapped inside. At least two bodies were seen to be removed.

Yurij Caplinskij, 64, is charged with "endangering waterborne traffic resulting in multiple deaths" and 35 counts of failing to provide help.

During the opening hearing at a district court in Budapest, prosecutors said they were seeking a nine-year jail term and a ban from driving waterborne vessels for Caplinskij if he admitted all the charges.

The Ukrainian denied the charges and declined to make any further statement.
